I've been reading the novelization and it fleshes out Snoke and his talks with Ren more. One particular passage struck me because it really makes Snoke look a lot creepier than in the film. The novel shows him as more affectionate with Ren, and it's disturbing:
When next Snoke spoke there was an intimacy in his voice, a familiarity that sttod in sharp contrast to the commanding tone he had used with Hux.
“I have never had a student with such promise – before you.”
Ren straightened. “It is your teachings that make me strong, Supreme Leader.”
Snoke demurred. “It is far more than that. It is where you are from. What you are made of. The dark side – and the light. The finest sculptor cannot fashion a masterpiece from poor materials. He must have something pure, something strong, something unbreakable, with which to work. I have – you.” He paused, reminiscing.
The childgrooming theory suddenly seems a lot more plausible, especially with all that weird talk about Ren being pure and the way he keeps calling Ren special. It would've been interesting if this had been in the film, because it shows the contrast between Han and Snoke, wherein Snoke keeps telling Ren what he wants to hear, while Han is basically calling him expendable when he tells him Snoke doesn't need him.

Does anyone have advice for improving writing? I would especially love fanfiction-specific recommendations (i.e. how to keep people in character, or balance assumed knowledge from canon with new information).
I'm just finishing writing a fill for the Kylo likes to roleplay as Anakin and Padme during sex prompt, yet I can't seem to find the original prompt. I was sure it was on round four, but I've ran through it multiple times and is not showing up. I bookmarked it. But in a different computer I won't have access to until at least Thursday night when I get back home.
Does anyone else look at Kylo Ren's command shuttle swooping about and get distracted from someone-is-about-to-be-visited-by-imminent-disaster by how very much it looks like a manta ray?

Is the Wookiee life-debt Chewbacca owes to Han and his entire family for the rest of his life in exchange for Han rescuing him from slavery just before Han ditched the fuck out of the Imperial Navy back in the day canon, or was that just a book thing? Because if it's canon, that really adds another layer of pain to Chewie even taking that shot at Kylo and egregiously fracture that life-debt.

When people write coffee shop/summer camp/theatre/hospital/etc AUs, what do you use for reference when you're writing about the location? Do you go off pop culture portrayals or other fics that are set in coffee shops, etc or do you use your own experiences? How much do you research the setting before writing?

The story's art looks like a shitty Beano remake though, as opposed to the main comic which looks pretty photorealistc, so maybe they kept the random 'love interest' storyline in the ignorable shitty art section.

I had been saving up a window with about 10 tabs of TFA longer fic that I was collecting to read over this weekend since I don't have to work, but I've lost it! Somewhere between yesterday morning and this morning, it got closed before Safari shut down (dumb Safari and it's complete lack of warnings when you try to shut a window with multiple tabs! It doesn't even have a way to turn that warning on!) and I've lost all the tabs! They were mostly on AO3 but they weren't even all recent posts, and I don't even recall vague titles or premises to go specifically searching.

What are your favourite fills from prompt 3/4?
Because I don't really give a fuck about splitting hairs about whether it's genocide or gigadeath or something else, but looking at political parallels to the baddies in Star Wars is really interesting.
Example: A friend of mine pointed out that the Republic in the prequels can be easily turned into an analogue to the Confederacy, since slavery seems to be legal to the point where the Jedi refuse to "steal"/rescue Anakin and instead try to just...buy him. Like, it's not what happens on every planet, but the Republic's response to planets where it is common seems to be "Meh, it's their culture."

Why do characters smoke in so many fics? Not as a kink, just in stories where Poe or Hux just light up a cigarrete at random for no reason at all. It drops me right out of the story because it feels so out of character. It'd be different if there was a hint they smoked in the film.
Are there any resources etc. about how Starkiller operates, the schematics, stuff like that? Either online or in something I can buy. I just realized that the actual mechanism of Starkiller is absolutely crucial to a story I'm writing. :(

It doesn't seem to be a big thing in this fandom, and I'm not sure why. I've seen a little Daisy/Adam and Domhnall/Adam shipping on Tumblr, but that's about it.
