I feel like most people care more about the basic plot of people getting together with some wacky hijinks thrown in more than the actual setting.
This might be true of most people, though I'm not convinced. But speaking just for myself, the only reason I might care a lj reading a mundane AU is if people put some care and hopefully research or life experience into the setting. Two characters hooking up in a barely-pencilled in cliche setting? Boring as hell.
