Character Self-Identification

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I have ever been as intense a fan of a show or movie where I wasn't sure what character I personally Identified with the most.

What about you all? Do you identify with a particular Star Wars character, and if so, why?

I hate to say it, but I've started to identify with Hux (after reading a lot of Kylux fanfic) because I have a lot of responsibility for something I'm proud of helping to create but that I don't know if it will work, and I seem to spend more of my time dealing with the fallout from my friends having emotional problems than I would ever like to and it's fucking annoying.

Is it genocide? It's genocide, isn't it?

I'm not saying it couldn't turn out that way, but...

Tangentially, I think I'm in the minority in not considering the destruction of the Hosnian system genocide. Hux wasn't trying to wipe out a race, he was trying to blow up plants. Not that that's any better, but it's a different thing. Geocide? Planetocide?

gen·o·cide
noun

the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation.

Re: Character Self-Identification

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't an ethnic group or nation, though; it was just everyone who happened to be on the planet at the time. Hux isn't going around hunting down ethnic Hosnians. He just picked a target and went with it.

He did blow up the whole planetary system, but it wasn't about species, it was about political ideology, so it was a pretty conclusive first strike in a war/coup that would have been short if it wasn't for the pesky Resistance.

What type of plants was he trying to blow up?

Does this stem from his very serious childhood allergy to plants and his need to eradicate all of them so he no longer sneezes, which is most unbecoming of a serious army general?

Iain M. Banks' Culture novel series supplies a useful term: gigadeath crime. A gigadeath crime consists of destroying a planet, orbital, star or system containing large numbers of sapient beings.

The "giga" doesn't designate an actual number. Instead the term is commonly understood as one of the worst things a being can do. In the Culture, it's collected similar connotations to those "genocide" has for us, but allows for the sheer scale of such an atrocity to be recognised.

I am so much like Finn. I was the good student when I was young - and I never managed to become someone outside of this. Now there's a big scary world out there and I have to start being an adult and it terrifies me.

I'm so happy he exists to show people that it's okay to be scared sometimes. And that you'll vanquish your fears eventually.

Not really. I very rarely identify with fictional characters and the two times I have weren't for positive reasons (but more a projection of my issues/life experiences).

I tend to like fictional characters because they're a way to explore interesting people different from me and a way to write fic about people without projecting any self-identification or personal issues onto them. But I realize I'm probably in the minority of not identifying too much with characters.

This is exactly how I feel.

Re: Character Self-Identification

I feel the same way. I've never quite understood people who say they don't like a book or movie if they can't identify personally with one of the characters.

I actually enjoy things less when I identify too much with characters.

I'm ashamed to say that I'm just a real mess like Kylo Ren and that some of the ways he's portrayed in fic absolutely resonate with me. It often makes me laugh because yeah, I'm pretty terrible, ridiculous and pathetic myself. :|

I think I'm better at hiding my general messiness, however, so no dead fathers or broken consoles for me. Plus, I haven't worn all black since I was 18.

Hah, same. It didn't help that quite a few of his behaviours I recognised as ones I did when I was under the deepest thrall of my mental illness. He's a terrible shitbag (even if Snoke has basically groomed him for personal use), but I still want to give him a hug and refer him to a good therapist.

Unlike you, I do still regularly wear all black though. :D

I am basically BB-8
-white with orange spots
-very round
-love Poe
-would follow Rey in a heartbeat
-would trust Finn with little proof
-people have trouble understanding me when I talk
-always struggling

I identify with Luke, Kenobi and Yoda because I too wish I could run away from all my problems and hide in another isolated planet.

I'm Finn before escaping. Disillusioned, scared, in deep shit and desperate to kidnap a Poe.

ayrt

Me either. That's why I'm desperate for a Poe.

Re: Character Self-Identification

I wouldn't say I exactly identify with Poe but I have some firm preferences about his characterization that have to do with my own life experiences. I'm 32 and I have a hard time buying it if he's not written as an emotionally mature adult, or on the other side when he thinks he's just SOOO OLD and therefore undesirable. Hell, I'm a woman and we have an early sell-by date in our culture and I might joke about being an Old in fandom but I don't feel actually old and gross at all. The idea of a relationship with someone Finn's age would give me pause because people in their early 20s seem kind of young to me now, not because I feel old. On the other side, I'm sure it's plausible that due to life circumstances he's never been in a serious relationship, but I just can't get into a version of Poe who's not reasonably competent with emotions. He might be surprised at having a sudden strong crush on someone, but I don't like it if he's all "oh noes this has never happened to me before ever."

Oops, that went off topic fast.
