Shows, books and movies have done this before and it screams of "look how progressive we are having a supposedly queer character but never mentioning that in canon!"

Showing an openly gay character doesn't have to mean a big, dramatic reveal scene. It's not that difficult to throw in a line or small offhanded scene indicating they're gay.

Totally this. After the interactions in TFA they only need to keep that up and not overtly deny it with a female love interest for Oscar, or even keep up the flirting even with side mentions of het because bi works too.

Definitely.

Though, I think people keep forgetting that the screenwriters are at the mercy of Disney. They could be all for gay or bisexual characters, but they don't have entirely free reign to write what they want.

Since mcu is a topic upthread, just look at how Disney forced the Cap 3 screenwriters/directors to change the plot of the script entirely.

To be fair, wasn't a big part of that change to do with Robert Downey Jr wanting to be bumped from a cameo to a leading part of the plot?

But the whole point was that Cap 3 wasn't going to be about Civil War until Downey complained that he deserved a starring role and they changed the script to be Civil War instead.

Originally, Marvel wanted to hire Downey for a small role, which would have required just three weeks of work. But Downey wanted Stark to have a more substantial role in the film’s plot, which would give him more screen time and naturally a bigger payday. This angered Marvel Entertainment chief Ike Perlmutter, who ordered the screenwriters to write Iron Man out of the script entirely, sources said.

Behind the scenes at Marvel is an absolute mess from every angle. There's also an interview with the Cap writers about how they were asked to rewrite the script to make RDJ have a bigger role, but I can't seem to find that. I think it might have been on the DVD, come to think of it.

Yup, and Perlmutter is gone now, or at least demoted to somewhere he can't control the MCU finances anymore. (Judging by some of the ridiculous stories about his cost cutting, this is probably a good thing.) From what I gather, RDJr is getting paid more for being in a Cap film than Chris Evans, the titular lead, is.

Yeah, like $20 million more and also a bit percentage of the profits if the movie does well. Marvel has said that if Civil War does well, they'll attribute it to RDJ and put him in more of the future movies.

Even for AoU, he made $40M and the next closest was Scarlett who made $20M and everyone else made under $10M. It's crazy.

Perlmutter is still overseeing the TV, comics and merchandise of Marvel. Feige reports to the Disney studio chief for all the movies.

Tony Stark is the only role RDJ can play and make me believe he's the character (probably because he is a spoiled rich brat himself) so I'm okay with more Iron Man, even if he's there to be a giant dick. Which again, RDJ.

It shouldn't be a dramatic reveal scene either. Just like no charaters have said anything negative about Rey's gender in aggression towards her making the subtle shift that a female being a badass isn't even notable, Poe being gay would just be what he is, and no big deal or shock to it at all. I'm so hoping they at least leave it open to being possible and don't make a big DSL about it. A canon gay hero character could help so many lgbt kids find strength.

Oh, I agree. I hope my comment didn't sound like I wanted a big, dramatic reveal scene. I actually really dislike those, partially because it comes off as trying to shock the audience and partially because not every queer person has a dramatic coming out.

I love the reveal from the author but There could have been more hints in his backstory to support it, even within the confines of a mentor-student relationship and it being entirely irrelevant to the point of him showing his backstory. It wouldn't need to be obvious and the kids wouldn't need to catch on because they were all busy dealing with other things, just something more so the readers could get a hint. I don't recall any fan theories about it at all in the heyday.

The biggest Dumbledore theory I remember from HP's heyday was the "Dumbledore is a time-traveling Ron Weasley" theory. That was a fun ride.

I took that with a grain of salt because JKR has made a bad habit of releasing canon tidbits well after the fact. Like saying she could envision certain characters as different races instead of, you know, actually writing them that way.
