Reylo art to be a part of the Star Wars Celebration exhibition, approved by a group of Lucasfilm employees, made by an actual Lucasfilm artist Erik Maell (not just licensed as haters will try to claim). Since Reylo is oddly absent in this kinkmeme.
I doubt there will be unless I mention something like how fascinating it is that in this exhibition Kylo is almost always the center or the biggest figure in the painting, yearning for Rey or something similar, and it was approved by a panel judged by Lucasfilm insiders. Antis will just pretend Finn/Rey isn't friendzoned by canon or by one of the actors himself, and Rey Skywalker fans will just delude themselves further that she is somehow Luke's daughter.
So is all the other stuff that got re-written or changed during filming though. The novelization has so many differences from the finished film it's ridiculous. It's also written like a bad RP session fic in many places.
Yeah, I can see how it's definitely got a Reylo vibe to it, but it looks like a vintage cheesecake tribute/style of a scene that was already in the movie.
^This^ Plus, you know, the potential for more incest! (Seriously, if you ship Reylo over any combination of Finn/Rey/Poe, there's something wrong with your ability to recognize the requirements for a healthy relationship.)
Or perhaps you are a Reylo shipper because, like many people, you separate out fantasy and reality. Or you read fic because you particularly enjoy reading messed-up relationships for whatever reason. Or you're delighted that your foe-yay comes with a badass lady hero, for once, who would win that hate-sex.
Then again, this might come down to different uses of the word "ship". I use the term not to say "I want to see these characters in a happily ever after with 2.5 kids and a healthy, functional relationship". When I say ship I mean "This character dynamic appeals to me and I want to see how it would play out given circumstance". Hence rare-pairs. Hence shipping ALL the ships. A l l o f t h e m.
AYRT Yeah, I can see the interesting dynamic appeal of the pairing, and I love me some foeyay. My problem is with the folks who treat the pairing like it's DOESN'T have the hallmarks of a fucked up relationship (I've got the same problem with some of the Kylux shippers), treating it like any other "boy meets girl" situation. It's so lazy and boring. Also I naturally distrust any group that ships something with incest potential but instead of embracing it, sticks it's fingers in its ears and hums loudly, as though incest isn't part of Star Wars' canon.
It's probably not helpful looking at "Reylo shippers" as a single homogeneous group of people with an agreed upon set of motivations and beliefs. All you need to do is check the AO3 tag to see the incredible diversity of fic being produced by different people with different kinds of interest in the pair.
It's probably also a good idea to remember that few fanwork producers are doing so professionally, so "lazy and boring" depictions may well be someone honing their craft. I do not look back at my earlier works for this reason. Or it might be what the writer's into and, honestly, more power to them, I'll scroll on by.
And finally, controversial opinion time: the reason Reylo has fucked up elements is almost entirely the fact that it includes Kylo who is fucked up. The potential incest element does not make it more fucked up because 1) no Westermarck Effect 2) Since they weren't raised together (probably) and haven't met before (probably) the fuck-up consent issues/power imbalance inherent in a lot of incestuous relationships is just not present. Reylo isn't messed up because incest, it's messed up because Kylo. Genetic arguments ignored because space future tech, not necessarily looking for a reproductive relationship, etc.
AYRT You misunderstood my comment so badly, I don't even know where to begin correcting you. Seriously, I never said incest was the problem with Reylo, never grouped ALL Reylo shippers together, and never said I hold fanfiction to the same standards I would a professional novel. Also if you think Ren being a malajusted man-child who ruins his relationships Is a "controversial opinion" instead of canon, then I lament the poorly characterized trashfic you've been reading.
This. Sometimes I need my fucked up shit! Sometimes I also need cliches. It is like eating junk foot. Yes, it is crappy mass-produced shit, but it still tastes good. I don't eat it all time.
I mean, I get where the antis are coming from. I really do. Reylo is the main stream white cishet ship with really unhealthy dynamics and Kylux is its slashy fandom counterpart.
But in the end: All of this is fiction. I am here for entertainment. I will chose what entertains me. I cannot make myself stop shipping a pairing. Well, maybe I could, but why? Why should I ruin my fun?
What should I do? Be reasonable about it. Life and let life. Keep an open mind. And not take everything so personal.
well, the standard reply i have heard the last 20 years or so, when it comes to do the "right" thing in fannish shipping and the why is: because we should all check our priviliges , but of course , especially for het cis white women.
