This.
Sometimes I need my fucked up shit!
Sometimes I also need cliches.
It is like eating junk foot. Yes, it is crappy mass-produced shit, but it still tastes good. I don't eat it all time.

I mean, I get where the antis are coming from. I really do. Reylo is the main stream white cishet ship with really unhealthy dynamics and Kylux is its slashy fandom counterpart.

But in the end: All of this is fiction. I am here for entertainment. I will chose what entertains me. I cannot make myself stop shipping a pairing. Well, maybe I could, but why? Why should I ruin my fun?

What should I do?
Be reasonable about it. Life and let life. Keep an open mind. And not take everything so personal.

maybe I could, but why?

well, the standard reply i have heard the last 20 years or so, when it comes to do the "right" thing in fannish shipping and the why is:
because we should all check our priviliges , but of course , especially for het cis white women.

DA

After you check them, what do you do? Go, "Yup, still there, needs a wash" or what?

I've heard that too. My usual response is that the "right" thing to do is different for every person so haters can step off.

If that helps.

There are times, places, and decisions where checking your privilege is important, and whether or not you do so has a real impact on the world and the lives of others. Your choice of leisure time reading material is not one of them, nor is what you ship.

Policing other people's choice of shipping and reading – including the non-cis, non-het, non-white women who like things you don't like – actually does. Probably minimal, in the scheme of things, but there, which is more than can be said about any supposed harm done by a teenage girl spending two hours writing a sparkly Reylo romance.

You are right.
Being in several fandoms for 15+ years has opened my eyes about a lot of things.
Maybe I should have followed my own advice from the end of my comment above. I took the hate on reylo personal and vented.
Anyway, I will keep reading Reylo like the adult that I am. I know that it is problematic. Like drinking alcohol, it should be handled responsable.

Anon, seriously, it's fiction. You're not hurting anyone, even yourself, if you consume it "irresponsibly". No need to feel guilty.

da

Well, if you 'consume it irresponsibly' by reading or writing fanfic on your office computer during work hours, or sit and scroll through tumblr when you're supposed to be serving customers or something else, it could get you fired. At that point it may be an addiction issue though, which is its own problem.

AYRT. Which is completely irrelevant to what anyone in this thread was discussing, so I'm going to assume it's a joke.

You go right ahead.
