I wonder if the new older gentleman they recruited next movie will be a military man or a knight of ren.
man, i read the snark about trigger warnings on reason dot com allllll the time. it's refreshing to see (even anon) fandom pushback against the tumblr instinct to find everything "problematic".
Yeah.
But I sincerely doubt that is the case for a random sample of those on tumblr posting about how hard ~adulting is.

There's a section of fandom for every-damn-one, ain't there?
Fuckin' A.
Fuckin' A.
jesus fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck y'all take the fun outta everything.
What I need is a way to blacklist every comment that uses the word "problematic" unironically.

It's a pretty common racial stereotype in American media, which is probably why people are annoyed by it because they do seem it as a harmful racial stereotype they're tired of seeing.

Benicio del Toro is supposed to be the main villain, so while he could be a Knight of Ren, it seems unlikely. I'm just excited he and Laura Dern were cast because they're both fantastic.

Part of my headcanon for the Knights is that "Master" is a title like it was with the Jedi and Kylo is one of multiple Masters, not the head honcho. Mostly because I cannot with that giant failboat being in charge of anyone.

That was my interpretation. When I got really into creating Knights of Ren headcanons (aaaaand maybe making a self-insert... don't judge me), I, too, assumed Ren was a title, much like Darth.
Fir my own stories I tend to portray them as just a next generation of Inquisitors.
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Inquisitorius
And I am sort of going with that until something is actually revealed about them, hopefully by the next film.

how the hell do you know someone who's never heard of star wars before?
i taught middle school in the projects 2009-2012, when star wars was effectively dead, and those kids had at least HEARD of it. "isn't that that movie in space? with darth vader?"
i knew homeschooled kids who'd heard of star wars.

ARE YOU ME? DID I POST THIS IN MY SLEEP?
No, for I have done research and found some answers. JK, I didn't find any answers, but I DID see the movie four goddamned times, the last one with a kid and all I did was shush him and count spaceships.
How big was the Resistance fleet? They said they lost half of the fleet? How many got shot down? Anyone counted? I don't remember a large fleet shown.
Fucking tiny. At the end, there is that tiny transport that Leia arrived on at Takodana, the Falcon, and seven X-wings. They had maybe two dozen X-wings to start the movie. It's POSSIBLE that there's another Mon Calamari cruiser somewhere, but I really think that's Leia's transport, it looks like the right style. We saw their entire fleet. How the fuck they're going to do anything, I DON'T KNOW. Seems like the Resistance was relying on some NR senators giving them shit but not acknowledging it, but then they were all blown up, so! Who knows.
And where were the New Republic fleets? Where they all in the Hosnian system? Why put all your fleet in one place? Is the New Republic significantly smaller?
Seems like the fleet was indeed blown up. I would imagine some squadrons or escorts were out on missions, but perhaps not, since the NR demilitarized shortly after Endor. Maybe they had the equivalent of a peace-keeping force left and the FO took out every. single. ship.
How is the First Order funding all their shit? How big of a territory do they have? How come no one noticed them building a project that big? Was the First Order really competent at hiding? The Resistance recon team that good at sucking? If First Order was competent, how did they not set up better planetary defense systems? Short on money? Short on staff? If they were short on staff how long did it take for them to build a base that big?
I didn't even know this was a problem I had with the movie until I started researching where the fuck everything took place in this fucking galaxy (gd am I angry about this again, thank you anon!). The FO, acc to sources (idk, wookieepedia? based on some novels I refuse to read or this cross-sections book that pisses me off for how little it helped because I GUESSED EVERY DIMENSION BEFORE I GOT IT) built their own shipyard out in the Unknown Regions. Which is uncharted, so a great hidey-hole. That answers a lot of your questions, but it DOES NOT justify how the fuck Snap Wexley did his recon all sneaky-like and then booked it back to D'Qar which is REAL FAR AWAY and it should have taken him muuuuuuuuuuch longer to navigate through an unmapped territory. AND POE COULDN'T HAVE PULLED OUT OF HYPERSPACE ON COMMAND LIKE THAT NO MATTER WHAT ALAN DEAN FOSTER WRITES TO RETCON THE SHIT OUT OF THAT --- but I digress. Don't try to understand how the FO got so big. OR EVEN if the entire FO was blown up on Starkiller Base.
Are there many more higher military commanders above Hux? Will we not see Ginger space nazi removed by Kylo Ren, Snoke, Resistance, a trip and fall, but through a military court martial?
Evil dudes are not my ~thang, so I've given this no thought at all. I know in the OT there were several Grand Moffs (like Tarkin), so there are probably several Huxes. Whatevs. Next!
How crippled are both sides now?
The Resistance has to be a quadriplegic at the very least, if not in a vegetative coma, since the FO has its own shipyard. UNLESS -- now hear me out -- the Fresian senator was somehow out-of-system when Hosnian Prime blew and he's all irate and pledges his world's support to the Resistance and gives them their pick of Incom's shipyards (home of the X-wing, yo!). OR EVEN Corellia with their shipyards goes rogue, which seems really likely because they're always doing cowboy shit. Wait, fuck! How could I forget about Mon Calamari? They build beautiful cruisers, and Ackbar is back in the shit. Why the fuck aren't there more Mon Cal cruisers, he's like a global hero!!!
OR
Leia's Resistance is just one cell, and there's a lot more going on.
Does Snoke have mad cash and make it rain for the First Order boys?
My guess is that Snoke has his fingers in a lot of pies. But again: bad dude, I don't give a fuck.
Is anyone working on an anti-deathstar shielding program?
Probably not. Third time's the charm and all.
Do the novels explain?
The novelization tries, but the parts I skipped to for REAL EXPLANATION just pissed me off. I don't even want to pick up the other novels.
Also most of the on screen Resistance deaths were of non-humans. What, other species can't drive or something? Speciest I say!!!
Nien Nunb didn't die! But a lot of humans died in the OT, so maybe they're just evening up the score. IDK.

It's mostly a Western phenomenon. I went to undergrad at a university that had a lot of international students and it wasn't unusual to have people who'd never heard of star wars or star trek or other popular movies or shows from America.

because people with no reason to be a victim need to feel like a victim, so they go out onto the internet to accuse others of microaggressions.
you are not wrong. and no one can read minds, so i don't understand why others are so intent to find ill-intent in everyone's words.
the irony of those attempting to be allies wrongly maligning someone with whom they proclaim alliance is .... kind of phenomenal, in the value-stripped version of the word.

I just hope they don't kill off Hux to make place for him.
Though having him put Hux in his place for failing, that I can got with just fine. And I am so looking forward to any further movie news.

omg yes counting ships! I was like, wait, that was half their fleet? How????
omg yes that I am not the only one pulling out my hair overthinking all this. Once you go too deep into logic the movie magic is just gone. But still... ):
And Nien Nunb is my hero.

It's okay kiddos, you can ship, or not ship, who you like
(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 02:20 am (UTC)(link)I've seen a lot of comments here and on tumblr about people shipping, or not shipping, certain things because of whether the ship is "right" - that is, whether is represents the most progressive possible combination of characters in a healthy relationship. While I'm glad people are thinking about such things, I think that people are creating a feeling of obligation where there doesn't need to be one.
You can write about two dudes gettin' it on without making one's canon female love interest dead, unappealing, or evil. You can write about two people in an unhealthy relationship without treating that relationship as something to aspire to. It's good to be aware of what you're portraying and how, but that doesn't mean any ships are off-limits; it doesn't mean that any ships are "right."
You do you, you lovely people! And if you doin' you means you write some assholes hate-fucking while wounded and at high risk of hypothermia, it's okay! If you're really worried, you can include a "do not try this at home" disclaimer. Ship freely! ♥

Anon, you have zero reason to worry about hating women for wanting to read about a character like you.
Headcanoning Rey as ace is at worst an annoyance (when it really is about shoving her out of the way). It doesn't hurt women. It doesn't hurt anyone. It's a headcanon. But to the extent that it is an issue to begin with, it's a trend-level issue, and it makes little sense to take trend-level phenomena and apply them to individuals and say 'because misogyny is sometimes a reason for people to do this thing, everyone who does this thing for any reason is bad and must secretly hate women even if they don't realize it or act like it.' Because, as you yourself demonstrate, there are a lot of different potential reasons to headcanon something, and some of them don't have a damn thing to do with any kind of bigotry.
And frankly, even if you are a super-secret misogynist, if literally the only way your alleged misogyny comes out is in how you write about a fictional character (and not, say, how you treat actual women), then you can pretty much write it off as irrelevant and harmless. And if you are treating other real women badly (which I am 95% certain you're not), you need to work on that before stressing about fictional characters.
to;dr: there's nothing wrong with you and you're doing nothing wrong.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 03:33 am (UTC)(link)I think fandom hasn't gotten more judgemental - usenet wank man usenet wank.
But there are more people in fandoms with ready access and at finger tip fast communication now, and we do tend to shoot off at the mouth behind screens. So now we have a higher frequency of character bashing, pairing bashing, and even user bashings.
And a lot of the times it is not at all about justice or goodness or what is right or wrong, it is just good old bashings and flamewars.
But if we all stop writing and drawing and fangirl/boying, there'd be no fandom left.
So thank you OP. For we must keep on,

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 03:53 am (UTC)(link)I have heard the legends of the old...Harry Potter wank wars. Some say they are true, all of it. xD
No, but seriously. This has been around for a while. I think it just feels bigger now because fandom has become more "mainstream". Like half this stuff used to happen in the dark corners of fandom. But with the popularity of Twilight/50Shades, Tumblr becoming a thing, we hear more about it openly.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 04:22 am (UTC)(link)I wouldn't place all the blame on tumblr, but actually on LiveJournal. LJ in its heyday was where wank really exploded and reached across large swathes of fandom. Before specific shippers or fandoms would congregate in a lot of different palces, mostly messageboards or Yahoo/MSN groups, so fandom was very scattered. LJ brought people together in a big group format and combined multiple fandoms into one place.
