No, for I have done research and found some answers. JK, I didn't find any answers, but I DID see the movie four goddamned times, the last one with a kid and all I did was shush him and count spaceships.
How big was the Resistance fleet? They said they lost half of the fleet? How many got shot down? Anyone counted? I don't remember a large fleet shown.
Fucking tiny. At the end, there is that tiny transport that Leia arrived on at Takodana, the Falcon, and seven X-wings. They had maybe two dozen X-wings to start the movie. It's POSSIBLE that there's another Mon Calamari cruiser somewhere, but I really think that's Leia's transport, it looks like the right style. We saw their entire fleet. How the fuck they're going to do anything, I DON'T KNOW. Seems like the Resistance was relying on some NR senators giving them shit but not acknowledging it, but then they were all blown up, so! Who knows.
And where were the New Republic fleets? Where they all in the Hosnian system? Why put all your fleet in one place? Is the New Republic significantly smaller?
Seems like the fleet was indeed blown up. I would imagine some squadrons or escorts were out on missions, but perhaps not, since the NR demilitarized shortly after Endor. Maybe they had the equivalent of a peace-keeping force left and the FO took out every. single. ship.
How is the First Order funding all their shit? How big of a territory do they have? How come no one noticed them building a project that big? Was the First Order really competent at hiding? The Resistance recon team that good at sucking? If First Order was competent, how did they not set up better planetary defense systems? Short on money? Short on staff? If they were short on staff how long did it take for them to build a base that big?
I didn't even know this was a problem I had with the movie until I started researching where the fuck everything took place in this fucking galaxy (gd am I angry about this again, thank you anon!). The FO, acc to sources (idk, wookieepedia? based on some novels I refuse to read or this cross-sections book that pisses me off for how little it helped because I GUESSED EVERY DIMENSION BEFORE I GOT IT) built their own shipyard out in the Unknown Regions. Which is uncharted, so a great hidey-hole. That answers a lot of your questions, but it DOES NOT justify how the fuck Snap Wexley did his recon all sneaky-like and then booked it back to D'Qar which is REAL FAR AWAY and it should have taken him muuuuuuuuuuch longer to navigate through an unmapped territory. AND POE COULDN'T HAVE PULLED OUT OF HYPERSPACE ON COMMAND LIKE THAT NO MATTER WHAT ALAN DEAN FOSTER WRITES TO RETCON THE SHIT OUT OF THAT --- but I digress. Don't try to understand how the FO got so big. OR EVEN if the entire FO was blown up on Starkiller Base.
Are there many more higher military commanders above Hux? Will we not see Ginger space nazi removed by Kylo Ren, Snoke, Resistance, a trip and fall, but through a military court martial?
Evil dudes are not my ~thang, so I've given this no thought at all. I know in the OT there were several Grand Moffs (like Tarkin), so there are probably several Huxes. Whatevs. Next!
How crippled are both sides now?
The Resistance has to be a quadriplegic at the very least, if not in a vegetative coma, since the FO has its own shipyard. UNLESS -- now hear me out -- the Fresian senator was somehow out-of-system when Hosnian Prime blew and he's all irate and pledges his world's support to the Resistance and gives them their pick of Incom's shipyards (home of the X-wing, yo!). OR EVEN Corellia with their shipyards goes rogue, which seems really likely because they're always doing cowboy shit. Wait, fuck! How could I forget about Mon Calamari? They build beautiful cruisers, and Ackbar is back in the shit. Why the fuck aren't there more Mon Cal cruisers, he's like a global hero!!!
OR
Leia's Resistance is just one cell, and there's a lot more going on.
Does Snoke have mad cash and make it rain for the First Order boys?
My guess is that Snoke has his fingers in a lot of pies. But again: bad dude, I don't give a fuck.
Is anyone working on an anti-deathstar shielding program?
Probably not. Third time's the charm and all.
Do the novels explain?
The novelization tries, but the parts I skipped to for REAL EXPLANATION just pissed me off. I don't even want to pick up the other novels.
Also most of the on screen Resistance deaths were of non-humans. What, other species can't drive or something? Speciest I say!!!
Nien Nunb didn't die! But a lot of humans died in the OT, so maybe they're just evening up the score. IDK.
omg yes counting ships! I was like, wait, that was half their fleet? How????
omg yes that I am not the only one pulling out my hair overthinking all this. Once you go too deep into logic the movie magic is just gone. But still... ):
I was three lines in on the crawl when I got pissed off (General Leia Organa, what the FUCK) and I spent the whole movie going, "JUST SAY HIS NAME. IS THIS SOMEONE I KNOW? FUCK. IT'S NOT."
And I had problems with Poe's magic realspace conversion from the first time I saw it. :|
