I have heard the legends of the old...Harry Potter wank wars. Some say they are true, all of it. xD
No, but seriously. This has been around for a while. I think it just feels bigger now because fandom has become more "mainstream". Like half this stuff used to happen in the dark corners of fandom. But with the popularity of Twilight/50Shades, Tumblr becoming a thing, we hear more about it openly.

Re: It's okay kiddos, you can ship, or not ship, who you like
I wouldn't place all the blame on tumblr, but actually on LiveJournal. LJ in its heyday was where wank really exploded and reached across large swathes of fandom. Before specific shippers or fandoms would congregate in a lot of different palces, mostly messageboards or Yahoo/MSN groups, so fandom was very scattered. LJ brought people together in a big group format and combined multiple fandoms into one place.
Re: It's okay kiddos, you can ship, or not ship, who you like
But at least LJ had communities that sort of organized and segregated the different sections of fandom. I still find it easier to navigate than tumblr, slightly less time wasting because there no 'oh this got reblogged on my dash again'.
Tumblr at times feel like ADHD spazz to me. Great for art blogging, not so much for discussions. People click more and talk less. I wonder what the next platform would look like.

It did, but if you had a big friends list, you still got wank or stuff from different fandoms without the ability to block anything. The one thing I do like about tumblr is the ability to block by tags. With LJ you had to create a filter and the filters were by users, not fandoms or tags.
It still had the same frenzy as tumblr, but it was more focused on words than pictures.
