I think fandom hasn't gotten more judgemental - usenet wank man usenet wank.
But there are more people in fandoms with ready access and at finger tip fast communication now, and we do tend to shoot off at the mouth behind screens. So now we have a higher frequency of character bashing, pairing bashing, and even user bashings.
And a lot of the times it is not at all about justice or goodness or what is right or wrong, it is just good old bashings and flamewars.
But if we all stop writing and drawing and fangirl/boying, there'd be no fandom left.
