The rumors I've heard is that they're giving the new trio more scenes together.

But, really, I think they're just going to give Poe a bit more screentime since I don't think anyone at Disney expected such a huge fan response to him. They must be glad they didn't kill him off in TFA like they originally planned.

Based on the way they've handled potential queer characters in the Marvel movies, I don't hold out hope that they'd make one of the new trio gay. Especially since the latest rumors are that one or two of the new female characters for VIII are supposed to be love interests.

Ugh. I don't care what gender a 'love interest character' is, I hate characters that are introduced specifically to be love interests. Might as well have a plank of wood with genitals.

I think the rumors assumed love interest because the actresses were said to be doing readings specifically with John Boyega.

I remember those rumours from before TFA came out, because there was a lot of interest in Disney apparently looking for WOC in supporting roles, thanks to fan comments (in the same way Phasma became a woman after fan backlash over the lack of female characters). Which would obviously be great, since the only WOC role in TFA that had more than one line got cut out. And now I'm hearing these potential WOC roles might be the ones that are trimmed to make more room for the new trio, which is upsetting if true. I mean, great that we're getting more of the new trio, but surely there must be other stuff that could be cut down to free up space for them?

The rumours did seem to jump to the love interest conclusion because of John Boyega being involved, like you say. In hindsight, I wonder how true that was. I know a lot of fandom seems resistent to Finn/Rey, but I felt like TFA set that pairing up quite well, so I'm skeptical they'd have a different love interest for Finn. Hmmmm, guess we'll have to wait until December 2017 to find out.

As much as I ship Poe/Finn, I'd also love to see Finn/Rey because there's a big lack of positive interracial relationships in blockbuster movies. I do think they set it up well, but I think they could easily make it into friendship, as well, especially if Rey does become a Jedi.

And by positive interracial relationships, I meant male/female. I'm well aware that Poe/Finn is also interracial. There's still a lot of negativity towards white women/black men relationships.

There was Lupita N'yongo. Although I guess you aren't counting her because she only voiced a character? Either way, I do agree that the lack of WOC characters is disappointing. It would be good if they rectified that in the upcoming movies.

To be fair, Lupita specifically said she wanted to voice a character instead of appear on screen because she was tired of being cast only because of her skin and not her ability.

Sad that that means she just has to voice something since she can't trust anyone to be able to cast her in a part that isn't just about her being black.

Agreed. It's sad that there's such a fine line between casting queer or POC due to pandering or due to genuine desire for an actor's talents or to have different characterizations.

Yup. It's messed up that unless a character is specifically written as being a POC or queer or disabled or trans or any other minority, they're automatically assumed to be straight white cis and able-bodied by the Hollywood system. And if they are written as part of a minority, too often that identity is the sole factor of their characterisation and personality. :(

Is it true that Finn was originally going to be white/they were only auditioning white guys for him until John Boyega came along?

I think they just made it nonspecified casting and he got the part.

Definitely. That's also why Oscar Isaac shortened his full name. He didn't want to get cast in the stereotypical parts that usually go to Latino men.

And he got parts where he had to play a white guy as a result. He had white parents and a white sister onscreen in Inside Llewyn Davis, like they just erased all biological possibility that non-white people could have stories that were about their thoughts and actions and desires besides race.

He could have been adopted though couldn't he?

He can pass as white. Surely it's better he can play parts written for both white guys and Latino guys?

Or would you honestly prefer him confined solely to Latino roles, and "white roles" reserved only for white people?

You're right, I should have clarified I meant seeing WOC onscreen, sorry about that. Lupita being part of the film is fantastic, and I am so happy for her, but I'd also be happy to see WOC playing WOC. Like in the MCU, when they finally cast a WOC, Zoe Saldana, in a major role, only to paint her green. Gamora is awesome, but the lack of other WOC in major roles that don't disguise their skin is disappointing.
