As in, what draws you to them? What is it about them that makes you feel tingly inside?
Personally, I'm a Finn/Rey shipper. I loved their dynamic in the movie -- it's funny and charming and I think the film did a stellar job in portraying them as equals. They help each other out, and they wouldn't have made it out of Jakku without each other. They're an amazing team and their friendship growth seemed pretty organic to me. I also can't deny that Ridley and Boyega's chemistry is pretty damn good. I can't wait to see what happens with them next film.
Well, I'm an absolute trashbucket for angst/pain/tragedy, and as such I'll ship anything that brings on the pain. Poe/Kylo where they were childhood friends is my current kick, but aside from a few NoTPs I'm not picky.
Heck, I'll even read ships that aren't themselves inherently angsty, just so long as you plop 'em in the right kinda f'ed up situation. (☞-.•)☞
Their age difference makes that SO WEIRD for me though. Unless you're really into the angst of Poe realizing he's into someone 10 years his junior with a totally different life experience. Because I can see the angst potential there and think Poe is such a gentleman he'd never push it.
I really like age difference in fics where the younger person is the aggressor, I guess, but get a strong read of Poe as the more interested party from canon.
See, I agree with you on all of that, and it's kind of I'm not into Finn/Rey stuff? Like, I am really satisfied with their relationship on screen so it doesn't give me an itch to explore it further in fandom.
Maybe it's from being ship-burned so badly by the original trilogy, but they read as siblings to me. I prefer non sexual non romantic bonds between characters tho so it may just be my predilection showing.
Leia/Han/Chewie, and now that Han is dead Leia/Chewie united in grief. #1 bulletproof OTP.
I also ship Poe/Finn and Finn/Rey, both because of the chemistry and the potential. I have less interest in Poe/Rey because they haven't interacted at all so there isn't much for me to headcanon about, and also because I don't necessarily like that much of an age difference.
I'm tangentially interested in reading about a really dub/non-con Phasma/Finn dynamic, but I just haven't found something like that that I like yet. I would want it to treat the fact that Finn was basically enslaved and had his rights horribly violated seriously, instead of make it seem like there's any romance or anything at all redeeming for the First Order in it. Also theoretically interested in Leia/Poe because I recognize that there is something interesting there that could be explored, but my hardcore shipping of Leia/Han/Chewie (and Poe/Finn) gets in the way of building a proper interest.
Usually I ship things because they're the characters my beta and I like writing. We've had the experience of trying a pairing a few times that seemed great in theory and eventually discarding it because it just wasn't working for us.
I also have a tendency to get really bored of big ships, because I see so many headcanons and so much fic and art and whatever that I burn out on ideas of what to do with it myself.
I haven't gotten her to watch TFA quite yet, but she's reading the novel. I'm getting this weird feeling that I'm going to burn out of my current favorite (Kylo/Hux) and end up in my usual lonely rairpair hell (projecting Hux/Poe.)
- I have a fondness for pairings with an age difference - They really save each other, in the sense that they both need something the other has to survive together. They're equally competent in their own field. - Separately, they're my favorite characters. I fell in love with Poe when he started sassing Kylo, and I fell in love with Finn when he shared openly his fears with Rey before thinking of leaving for the Outer Rim. - Their interactions are just great together. They're far from perfect, and it's really inspiring to watch because they manage to pull through against all odds. - Poe's respect and admiration for Finn. - Finn's respect for Poe, even though he's afraid, he wants to finish the mission of the man who freed him. - CO-OP gay adventures in space
I would love for it to happen in canon, but it's not going to. A major blockbuster franchise might bend enough to have a gay character, but they're not going to have two of their three leads in a gay relationship. Hollywood isn't that progressive and they're probably worried that most audiences would refuse to pay to see the movie if they went that route.
Kylux because I like fucked up power dynamics. Stormpilot because it's cute and fluffy but also because I like the idea of Finn relearning how to live (with Poe's help, natch) I'd have a femship if there was anyone I'd ship w Rey
Why do you ship (pairing)?
