Yeah, there's that as well. It really all comes down to business decisions.

I wish they could do like a Chinese version and an international/official version. Poe and Finn could become canon in a scene that could be cut without causing a huge plot hole, China gets the no homo version of the movie.

Uh no.

Why?

I say this because having a different version of the movie for the Chinese market already happened with Iron Man 3. The doctor who removes Tony Stark's magnet was apparently played by a famous Chinese actor, and his scenes were longer in the "Chinese cut". It added nothing to the plot, the scenes were awkward and not very good. It was all obviously put in to please Chinese viewers.

You could say that making Poe/Finn canon for the world minus China would just be fanservice, but the very existence of a new trilogy after VI IS fanservice.

Best case scenario would be to say "fuck you China" and have them smooching for the whole world. Except Disney needs its precious yuans, so I'll take whatever I can get.

That's entirely different than adding a gay romance in a cut scene, though. I feel like just knowing it's in a different screening would be enough for some countries to bar it, even if it didn't show up in their final version of the movie.

Marvel also makes way more money in China than TFA did, so it made sense for them to release an extended up specifically for that market. It wouldn't make sense for them to do that for Star Wars.

China isn't the only country that would have an issue with it. They're probably also worried about how it would be received in other countries, as well as many Western countries.

It'd be nice if it happened, but I think people need to stop expecting it to happen. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a gay character or couple in one of the other SW movies like Rogue One, but it's unlikely to happen in new trilogy. Even if they did make Poe/Finn canon, they would have them kiss. At most you'd get a hug or a blink-and-you-miss-it acknowledgement.

You're all acting like China would ban it when China has independent gay cinema of its own. It's more like Russia that would outright ban it. If we're going o be xenophobic and say fuck you to other countries, let's at least aim our hatred accurately.

I agree, unfortunately China's issues come down to race more than sexuality (Finn was removed from a lot of the marketing). A gay romance would probably be a bigger issue in Russian markets, or in extremely religious countries like some of South America or the Middle East/Africa.

THANK YOU.

And let's not even pretend that the extreme homophobia in hyper christian African countries atm isn't almost entirely England and America's fault in the first place.

IA, but I think a lot of those problems stem from British Imperialism. America has had some part to play, but the backbone of those issues came from England.

American evangelists perpetuate them to this day, however. Look up what American missionaries did in Uganda in the last decade. It's chilling.

I'm not denying that, I'm only stating that it started with England. There's a lot of forced erasure and handwaving from a lot of different people and areas about all the stuff England did for centuries. America might have done some awful stuff, but my country suffered more from England's actions than America's.

I think people tend to focus more on America these days because America continues to actively do it to this day, along with the Vatican, whereas the other colonial powers have largely scaled back/stopped.

I don't think anyone is denying that England fucked up most of the world in every aspect, not just culture and gay rights. Most Brits I know are well aware of the fact. I guess my point is there are countries such as the USA which are doing it right now, not 70 years ago. Gay rights have gone backwards in Uganda since American missionaries got involved there. If you want to protest cultural imperialism, the USA is as good of a target as England in the modern day.

My objection was more that if it's only in one scene that can be cut without the depth of their relationship being apparent in the rest of the movie, then it's really not good film-making.

The movie didn't do that well in the Chinese market, so it would be a waste of time and effort either way.
