I'm pretty sure Oscar was intentionally going for power bottom
The 2009 Star Trek kink meme was epic. I don't think I've seen any other kink meme come close since that one.
How do people feel about AUs in this fandom? Some fandoms seem to love them more than others but from what I've seen there's an equal amount of non-AU and AU fic for Star Wars.
I like AUs that are canon divergence, or an AU that changes people's relationships to each other or their affiliation, anything that keeps it in the same setting. But I don't care for modern day AUs or anything in other settings.
I say this as someone who has now WRITTEN a modern day AU, but that just happened. It's nothing I would normally read myself. I can't help my typing fingers.

I only really like canon divergent AUs that explore what would happen if the plot was different. So, something like what if Ben Solo had never turned into Kylo Ren or what would've happened if Finn and Poe found each other on Jakku after the crash or what if Rey's family came back for her.
I'm actually really pleased that TFA fandom wasn't immediately overrun with modern AUs or high school/college AUs. I have a few fandoms where those seem to the only types of fics written and I avoid them like the plague.
I enjoy a good AU occasionally, but after awhile I find that they all start to sound the same. That or the characters' personalities are changed so much just so they fit into a specific coffeeshop/high school/modern day AU plot and it feels more like original fic than fan fic.

I really don't like them in general, but I hate them even more in this fandom because I specifically am a fan of the world of Star Wars and want to read about characters in that world.
That said, I get that everyone has a different cup of tea and it's easy enough for me to exclude the AU tag in AO3 or just scroll on past.

I can't help but feel a bit like soulmate AUs are a plague that has swept every fandom, including this one. I just don't get the appeal whatsoever, and yet I keep seeing them everywhere. That's the only AU that makes me genuinely annoyed. Other than that, I'll try anything depending on the writing. There are good and bad AUs just like there are good and bad canon setting fics.
I really hate a/b/o or D/s AUs because I find that a lot of m/m slash fics turn one character into the stereotypical submissive female role and the a/o trend in particular can come off as justifying the barefoot and pregnant mindset. But I also hate the whole "this character can only ever bottom because of their personality/looks/build" trend.
Yes, I agree. I only like soulmate AUs when they're subverted. Like someone who has multiple soulmates or is colorblind so they'd never see colors when they met their soulmate anyway.
But I do think they've become the new trend and I am getting tired of seeing then. Whenever someone comes up with a unique idea that people enjoy, so many copies pop up and it becomes the new AU trope. I remember it happening after the BDSM AU from Stargate fandom. It was the "new big thing" and then suddenly everyone had BDSM AUs in their fandoms.

How do you exclude a tag on AO3? I know how to do it with pairings, but I didn't think you could for tags.
What's with the "saving sherlock" tee shirts and sweaters with a picture of a german shepard on them?
I've seen them all over lately. Mostly on middle aged men.

This is in the wrong place... ignore me...
I don't like either D/S or A/B/O AUs, but I don't think they're trying to justify anything. They seem evenly split between 'here's a specific unrealistic porn scenario' and 'here's a deconstruction of an unrealistic porn scenario used to criticize real world gender roles.' It's worth remembering that the people writing these things are women, i.e., the same people who have that biological essentialism and barefoot and pregnant mindset imposed on them, and writing ridiculous porn based on those things doesn't imply support in real life.
DA
I don't think it's fair to assume they're all women. Women may make up the majority of fandom, but there are also a lot of men who participate and write fic. I have quite a few on my tumblr friends list.

AYRT. That's a fair point. I meant to say "the majority of", and it looks like I forgot. With that said, although I'm sure there are exceptions, the majority of men I've encountered in fandom are not writing A/B/O.
I have to admit that I sometimes get a bit wary about questions like these. I mean, I suppose if all the people who talk about this only talk about it when they bash what other people ship and only write slash you might have a point.
But to be honest, I have read a lot of Finn/Poe fic by now, and I don’t see Rey neither as a lesbian nor as asexual that much in them. She is more likely to be asexual in Finn/Rey/Poe actually, where she is emotionally intimate with Finn and Poe and watch them to have sex without actually having sex, which hits me more as a self-insert than trying to get her out of the way. And there is really no point to ”getting rid of her” she and Finn is not in a relationship and she leaves at the end. Plus there is a villain ready available if you want to ship her with someone else.
I suppose I say that questions like this makes me wary is because they disregard how much I think a lot of people identifies with Rey. I mean, how many of the people who claims that she is lesbian or asexual identifies as those things themselves? And are we suppose to start questioning if people ship Reylo to get Rey out of the way? For every person who are disingenuous about why the argue about Rey’s identity I think there is a bunch that over-identifies with her. That said I certainly don’t approve if they are being assholes about it.

I kind of want to know the answer to this now.
+1, and I think it's best to let people do their own thing and not worry about whether they're doing it for socially approved of reasons, as long as they're not attacking or trying to impose their interpretation on others. Like, if someone starts claiming Rey must be asexual because she doesn't spend the movie obsessing over getting laid, or that shipping Rey with Kylo is wrong because she's a lesbian, that's worth criticism. But if it's just a headcanon, then why shouldn't she be interpreted that way?
I like AUs, but I wish people would change it up. There are too many soulmate, coffeeshop, high school, college, modern, and a/b/o AUs. I'm also tired of whatever imagine your OTP plot post is popular on tumblr at the given moment...like the "accidentally broke into the wrong apartment" AU that was popular last year.
what do people prefer to see kylo ren called in fics? kylo or ren?
Kylo.
Ren makes me think of Kevin Bacon in Footloose and that's not an image I want when reading Star Wars fic.
