what do people prefer to see kylo ren called in fics? kylo or ren?

Kylo.

Ren makes me think of Kevin Bacon in Footloose and that's not an image I want when reading Star Wars fic.

*kylo

Come on phone, that literally shares no letters with what I typed.

Clearly your autocorrect does not think highly of Kylo Ren.

Lol honestly I was a little mad at you for a sec.

Honestly I'm a lazy reader and if you have characters referred to as Rey and Ren my eyes will get hella confused.

Same.

this, seriously.

I think Kylo works better, because Ren is too close to Rey, and also are all the Knights of Ren called So-And-So Ren? Because that could get confusing, to refer to any of them as Ren.

Buuuuut in the novelisation, he's referred to as Ren. So when I'm writing fic, especially anything from the perspective of somebody in the First Order, I call him Ren to match that canon feel.

So basically, Kylo is my preference, Ren is canon-typical, and I will accept either when I'm reading fic. :3

I prefer Ren, for a couple reasons.

I have been operating under the assumption (which Wookieepedia seems to support) that Ren is a last name and not a title. Ren is a man who hides behind a mask to keep himself at a distance from the world and the people he interacts with. He would not be on a first name basis with people.

The First Order is a paramilitary/military operation and in the military people address other people by rank and/or last name. When Ren interacts with his colleagues in the First Order, it wouldn't be appropriate for them to speak to each other on a first name basis, nor do I feel they have close enough relationships to be on first name terms.

I also typically read/write Ren/Hux stuff, and since Hux has no given first name, I dislike the asymmetry of seeing one of them called by his first name, which carries the connotation of a closer relationship, and one being called only by his last name or name and rank (General Hux.)
