Re: Rey's characterization in fic

I have to admit that I sometimes get a bit wary about questions like these. I mean, I suppose if all the people who talk about this only talk about it when they bash what other people ship and only write slash you might have a point.

But to be honest, I have read a lot of Finn/Poe fic by now, and I don’t see Rey neither as a lesbian nor as asexual that much in them. She is more likely to be asexual in Finn/Rey/Poe actually, where she is emotionally intimate with Finn and Poe and watch them to have sex without actually having sex, which hits me more as a self-insert than trying to get her out of the way. And there is really no point to ”getting rid of her” she and Finn is not in a relationship and she leaves at the end. Plus there is a villain ready available if you want to ship her with someone else.

I suppose I say that questions like this makes me wary is because they disregard how much I think a lot of people identifies with Rey. I mean, how many of the people who claims that she is lesbian or asexual identifies as those things themselves? And are we suppose to start questioning if people ship Reylo to get Rey out of the way? For every person who are disingenuous about why the argue about Rey’s identity I think there is a bunch that over-identifies with her. That said I certainly don’t approve if they are being assholes about it.

+1, and I think it's best to let people do their own thing and not worry about whether they're doing it for socially approved of reasons, as long as they're not attacking or trying to impose their interpretation on others. Like, if someone starts claiming Rey must be asexual because she doesn't spend the movie obsessing over getting laid, or that shipping Rey with Kylo is wrong because she's a lesbian, that's worth criticism. But if it's just a headcanon, then why shouldn't she be interpreted that way?
