I don't think that anon was being salty. Their comment still tied in with canon, saying that a popular trope goes against canon characterization.

Thank you. That is what I meant. I never felt like the "Finn is oblivious about everything" from watching the film (TFA was the first SW film I watched completely without any knowledge of the other sources), so it has always been a bit of a pet peeve just how popular that particular trope has become.

My comment about before The Awakening was that even without taking into consideration that source that goes into more detail about exactly how good Finn was while in the Order. In the actual film we see him be a competent strategist and fighter, talking with General Organa like pretty much an equal when they were planning about how to deal with Starkiller Base, making a deal with pilots to get out of Takodana, know enough about relationships to know what a boyfriend is, etc.

So I just don't really get the "Finn has to be emotionally stunt and needs Poe to lead him by the hand constantly thing" got started in the first place.

I suppose I myself am a bit salty all-around, what with all the wank in the main threads. It felt like you were trying to start it up in this thread where I was (am) just asking a question and... anyway, I shouldn't have been quite so prickly. Sorry about that.

Still, opinions on the prompt and trope which inspired this question aren't really what I'm looking for here. I appreciate your response to my question, though.

Your thread was about what people considered canon. And I pointed out a pet peeve about how sometimes even what is canon on films gets taken over by fandom specific tropes regardless so even that isn't always an universal rule (I use Finn because he tends to be the most common one in this fandom, although not the only one Kylo (being super emo), Hux (being super submissive or an angry ginger) and even Rey (like Finn being constantly infantalized) and Poe's (being a sex maniac) characterization sometimes suffer from people just focusing on a single trope and ignoring the film). It was part of your initial topic on what is canon and what is "added bonuses"

I need to go to bed after this post, but what you actually said was "I think the only pet peeve I do have is when people just find a trope for a character and run it to the ground." and then complained about a specific popular trope, which really didn't come across as discussion about canon vs. popular fanon(?) so much as... taking the opportunity to complain about a trope you don't like.

I guess there's a discussion in there to have about canon and fanon (and extremes of fanon), but I'm too tired right now, heh. Night!

Maybe I am not getting across, English is not my native tongue. But it is part of the discussion regardless canon. My point was that sometimes picking what is or isn't canon can be near impossible because fanom tropes can become so popular even the main movie canon becomes completely obscured. Or people have a million different takes on what they watch, I have come across people getting mad at meta or authors who use canon descriptions because they go against the "meta" or "fanom interpretation' fandom has agreed on.

So I have no idea why you had to insult me by calling me salty for simply adding to the discussion on what people can consider canon. I never once insulted anyone. That is the point of using pet peeve. And yes fandom sometimes do run fanom (as in non canon) tropes to the ground, this is not a Star Wars issue. Is not being hateful or salty pointing out a common fact.

Also I pointed that trope because it was the first one that came to mind as an example.

And because I can't edit, it was all meant to be a response to your " claiming that a prompt had to be an AU due to an interpretation of a character that conflicts with material in Before the Awakening" comment. In the fact that even characterization that comes from a direct source (the films not the extra material), can be obscured by what fandom decides to make the popular interpretation of a character. Which sometimes means "canon' ends up becoming an "AU" in itself*.

*Sort of how everyone remembers the “Luke, I am your father,” misquote, when in fact the real line is "No, I am your father." But I bet most people would be think the later is the fake one.
