I thought it was amusing but took it with a grain of salt (in the way that I take most "canon" details that aren't depicted on screen) until fandom had to go and ruin it and start looking for other evidence of the cat in TFA and claiming that the cat better be in episode 8 or they'd be really disappointed and upset.
Millicent is getting to be like Gladstone in any Holmesian fanfic other than the RDJ Sherlock movies for me. Even though Gladstone was canon in one 'verse, that still doesn't mean that one line in the ACD stories makes Gladstone Watson's canon pet and applicable to all universes.
Realistically, if Hux had a cat, it was blown up on Starkiller, so I hope he didn't. Also I can't see the First Order being so permissive as to allow personal pets on board, even for officers. It'd be a waste of resources and allow feelings and comfort to creep into their command structure.
I've seen people in TFA fandom saying they'd be disappointed and upset about some really bizarre things. I was searching through some tumblr tags and came across someone who actually said they'd be upset if Rey/Jess didn't happen in canon which....seems ridiculous to me because Jess had what, one line? Not to mention they didn't even interact.
I think some people in fandom don't understand that popular fanon =/= canon.
I know the difference, and this person was actually upset about Rey/Jess and their post was about how it would be such a step forward to have a lesbian hero.
That's true that it would be a step forward, but personally I'd rather it (and any romantic plotline or character development, really) to come organically from the interactions of well-developed characters, rather than slapping a big "Love Interest" sticker on any character just for the sake of having a romantic plotline.
I like Rey/Jess in fic but that's more because of a lack of a better femslash pairing than any true love of the pairing itself. I'd be surprised if they even interacted in the next two movies.
This seems to happen across several fandoms. When the showrunners/actors/writers start to notice fandom and how it reacts to things, they realize they can troll the living crap out of us with vague mentions of things and watch us explode. (See also Steven Moffat)
Sometimes I don't even think it's meant to be trolling. It's just an actor in an interview with a dry sense of humor that's misinterpreted, like Oscar Isaac, for example. People tend to take his humor way out of context and I don't think he's even doing it to troll the fans, especially considering he's acted like that in interviews for years before he had a large fan base.
Oh come, are they really? That's dumb. I adore the idea as a joke and I think the Millicent headcanons are sweet, but it's obvious that it's not a serious part of the universe.

Literally nothing about the concept of Hux having a cat on board either Finalizer or Starkiller base makes any sense.
