Would you have been this upset if someone had written about them and used a European term?

Because I see that happening a lot in TFA fic and no one's getting overly upset about that.

NAYRT

If it was a brand name, yes. If the Resistance base ran out of Spam and needed (on a swamp planet otherwise full of sentient plant creatures) to go to Tesco to get more, I would indeed be upset. Unless it was an intentional crack-fill, in which case I would laugh.

I'm not upset. But if instead of reading that fic, I had seen one where the trio were drinking Irn Bru, or eating croissants or dining on Yorkshire pudding, I would have mentioned those instead. It just so happened that was the fic I read, so this was the fic I ranted about.

I haven't seen any European or Asian products or foodstuffs mentioned in other fics yet, but I have probably just been lucky.

I have already apologised. I have learned my lesson, I will make sure not to criticise fics in this fandom again, so please let it alone now.

You've got a valid point, and so does the ayrt. There's no need to swear off bringing up things that are bothersome just because a discussion got out of hand. I think everyone here is a little on edge due to the trolling and negative comments that we had a few of, and that sucks, but it's the internet and these things happen. Maybe we all just need to take a breath, let our hypervigilant defenses go a little and try to discuss valid points without taking them personally.

I honest to god don't think the discussion "got out of hand". It's all been civil, and people just have different tastes and disagree. We need to stop being so precious about it and just accept that, instead of pretending we're all the same and hold hands and sing kumbaya.

I think an anon saying "I will make sure not to criticise fics in this fandom again" is showing some genuine hurt arising from the discussion, and a sign things have 'gotten out of hand' for some people. It's better to head that off rather than ignore it. Everyone has been civil and have been explaining their points quite well, but that level of hurt and withdrawal isn't something that can be left unaddressed.

I think they were just saying that to be passive aggressive, myself. Which I think is their right because they were being totally reasonable and should feel free to get their barbs in against their attacker.

I don't know if I'd classify some of the anons who responded as attacking them, though.

That anon seemed to be passive aggressively "hurt" because they were called out for making the author of the fic feel hurt with a rant directed at the author and the fic.

Except it's not at the author. It's patently in a place not aimed at hurting the author.

One of the anons from upthread

Look, I'm this annoyed and back click out of the fic whenever I can very clearly and identifiably see that they're using a term that makes zero sense in the SW universe, whatever the provenance. If they're talking about how Leia will have to consult with Angela Merkel over spƤtzle and Schwarzwurst, I will be equally annoyed and never read the rest of the fic.

Agreed. I'd read hell out of that as a crack fic though.

Not gonna lie, for me to even enjoy it as a crack fic it would have to know German politics pretty well and make some subtle digs, instead of just be weird for the sake of being weird. I just like authors who put some effort into things! That's all I'm saying! Sorry if that's horrible of me but the OP asked!!!
