Re: EXPLAIN HOW....

As someone in their early 30s, the thought of a 29 or 32 year old hooking up with a 19 year old makes me really uncomfortable.

Even Finn/Poe makes me uncomfortable for that reason because 23 and 32 is still a huge age gap.

A lot of men in the 27 - 30 age rage are still immature for their age. I assumed that aspect of his character was meant to portray his entitlement and anger over not getting everything he wants.

Very good point, that's definitely something I'd want avoided at all costs. While a rescue Finn plot could be done well, as a nice excuse to have all the people who grow to love Finn throughout the movies come together to help him (like Han's rescue in ROTJ), there is also a risk it could be handled extremely badly with seriously gross results.

Honestly, I don't mind if it happens, I don't mind if it doesn't, it's not the plot idea that made me reply intially. I'm just not keen on Rey being called a Mary Sue - that's why I ended up in this thread, because I didn't see the logic in 'Rey saves Finn in the same way Finn rescued Rey' = 'Rey is a total Mary Sue'.

Yup, I'm the same.

Age difference doesn't really bother me in fanfic: it's a fantasy, it doesn't have any bearing on what people do in real life. But if we're specifically talking real life, I'm in my early 30s and I wouldn't date someone who was 19 or 23. I'm surprised people cite the age difference as a reason not to ship Poe/Rey but are okay with Poe/Finn. Maybe because it's easier for women to project themselves on to Rey, so it disintigrates that distinction between fantasy and real life?

/!\autistic person/!\

I really don't think he was. I'm usually pretty good at picking up on ~cues~ when a character is intentionally coded as autistic and I didn't get that at all from Kylo. Angry, over-emotional, emotionally stunted? Sure. Autistic? Nah, not imo.

PA- A lot of people don't think as tater tots as a brand name, they tend to be called that even when they come from a completely different company or are home made. So it's far more likely the original author might not have even mad the connection to a brand. I'm not from the States originally and that is pretty much the only name I know that side dish as. And it is likely the same for many other people.

And again, my main issue was the rude tone of the comments. As I said when I first tarted reading I was surprised by people using terms like beer. Yet I never once decided the story stopped being valid for things like that. One of my most recent reads even used Guatemalan foods and culture to add to Poe's background, is very much not canon, but it was an unique way to add something to his character that ended up working for the author and readers.

To pretty much tell people not to use things like this because you yourself can't enjoy it, does come across like a douche move. Or telling them they would alienate the majority of the fandom if they do. Which is what I had a problem with. We can only speak for ourselves (we all have our pet peeves after all! for once I can't read stories that are first person POV), when you go around making genetic comments like that then I take issue.

That was me. I decided to look at the wiki to see what terms they used and see if the people calling foul had a point. The wiki clearly shows that they do use Earth-terms, tons actually. Any author would be within their right to read that and come to the conclusion similar terms wouldn't be so outlandish to include. To tell an author they don't care about the source material and anyone who does won't want to read their stories is just being rude to be rude.

Maybe I'm a white knight like the previous author said, but as someone who has enjoyed fanfiction for years, I don't like when people feel like it is their place to tell someone else what they can or can't write or that they are lesser of a fan for it.

We are all fans here and we also have our own unique ways to go about it. No one should be looked down by their fellow fans because of it.

I'm off though, this is a small thing and I have no desire to start a fight over it. I just felt people were being unfair to the author and couldn't keep quiet about it anymore because I could see people been discouraged to write with this mentality going around and that would suck.

the actual organizational problem is legitimately that systems like tumblr don't organize their tags so that name/name is searchable; this is why one distinct word works better as a tag on that particular website. maybe unnecessary for you, but useful for people who want to use the tagging system on another website.

Fair.

Do you think he would refer to himself as one in the middle of a screaming tantrum? Would it be fair to say he's training as one? Would it be fair to call Snoke one, though we don't necessarily know?

I need to know these things for reasons.

They don't, though -- for example, if you type 'Poe Dameron/Finn' into Tumblr's search feature you will get different results from typing in 'Stormpilot'. The singular tag means that you only get things related to the ship, not everything related to two popular characters.

I'm not saying they don't sound silly sometimes; I'm saying that ship names do serve a function within that context.

A lot of people on the internet also like to armchair diagnose people, so I would take any analysis with a large grain of salt because it's probably colored by the writer's perception, bias, or interest.

That being said, all of your points are something many people do and I don't think number two actually applies to Kylo at all. I think it's more that he understands people, but just doesn't care about their reaction or feelings and the understanding I got from his interaction with Rey was surprise that she had the Force, not that she wanted to kill him.

I am so glad the mod decided to make a "no prompts based on real life tragic events" rule. I've seen a few of those in the past weeks and there's another fic that was posted on AO3 today that is causing, rightfully so, a shitstorm in fandom.

Between segregation AUs and Nazi AUs, I'm disappointed in fandom.

With his obsession with Vader, I believe he would probably call himself one, even if his training is not completed.

I know this is a problem in many fandoms, but why do people think it's okay to write these types of stories?
