I don't necessarily want it to happen, but I'm betting Luke's going to reveal that not only is Rey his daughter, she was named after Leia. Take a kid out of their home culture/langugue at the age of 5 and drop them in a polyglot environment, linguistic drift happens fast, and Leia becomes Rey.

Well that's my mind blown for the evening.

But that's still saying that a main male character falling into the stereotypical female role is 'downgrading' or being 'sidelined'?

Luke dying? Poe dying? Fucking Leia dying?! Why would you put that out in the universe?!

Honestly, I really hope the only major character deaths we get from here on out are the bad guys. Maybe it's because I'm a comic fan, but I've grown to hate well-loved characters being killed for cheap drama or shock value, and killing any other members of the trio, either old or new, would feel that way to me. We've already had one major death, one character we loved not getting their happy ending, that's enough. Even though it could get dark, the original trilogy was ultimately an uplifting story, and I'd like to see that again.

I do love the idea of showing Kylo being hurt by Snoke and having obvious Stockholm Syndrome, though.

No, that's saying a character who was a main character having a smaller less visible role in favour of another character is downgrading or being sidelined.

They're just a cutesy form of slang, I don't know that they're worth looking down on. They've been around for ages, although they probably became more widely known when the media adopted "Bennifer". It's just a catchy nickname, like "Ginger Spice".

The only time smushnames or shipping names bother me is when I literally can't figure out how the fandom came up with them, because they make no apparent sense. But I don't hate the concept itself.

It's not cheap drama or shock value if it's plot relevant. It's a war, people die, sometimes even people who have lines.

Ah, okay, I see what you mean. But having Rey take on the role of rescuer wouldn't have to necessarily mean Finn being given a smaller less visible role. After all, Rey was captured during TFA and some of her most important character development happened during that time. Having Finn captured by the First Order could lead to some really meaty plot for him, since he's got such a messed up history with them. And I think it could be cute for him to be the one in need of rescue from the First Order, since he rescued both Poe and Rey from them in TFA. But I can understand where your concern would come from, in terms of him being captured potentially leading to him being kept offscreen, since that's certainly happened in other movies.

Re: EXPLAIN HOW....

I can't do Rey/Poe because they barely have any screen time and no backstory together so I have nothing to work with.

Other than that the age gap bothers me (19 to Poe's 32), just like in Reylo (19 to Ren's 29). I am around her age (actually a couple years older) and the thought of hooking up with a 32yo or a 29yo makes me uncomfortable

Kylo Ren = autistic?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-02 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen offhand comments made about this but I don't think there's ever been an in-depth discussion. A bunch of people have used the SNL skit as proof given how awkward Ren acts there while trying to interact with people. But obviously that's not canon, though I did notice some character choices that support the theory.

1) With the mask off, Kylo has trouble maintaining eye contact. He frowns a lot and looks away.
2) He doesn't seem to be able to understand people in general. He does things like kidnap Rey and then is genuinely surprised that she wants to kill him.
3) He acts very immature for his age and clearly has poor coping mechanisms.
4) He is singleminded and obsessive over one thing (Vader).

It's just unnecessary obfuscation. Just Name/Name and that's clear and easy to tag, unlike Finnpoe, Pinn, Foe, Puffin, Stormpilot, etc

Considering the distance of the flight to Luke's island thingy, she's spent a hell of a lot more time with Chewie.

Yup, it's a war, people die, I do get that. But it's also a fun morality tale set in space.

Okay, I understand that the prequel trilogy involved pretty much everyone dying or left in abject misery, but that was predetermined from the start. The original trilogy only had two major good guy character deaths - the old man who (briefly) acted as a mentor to the aspiring young Jedi and had a complicated history with the bad guy, and the short wise alien. The former death has obviously already been emulated in TFA (and I would prefer they don't emulate the second by killing Maz, but I guess we'll see). Ultimately, the original trilogy is an uplifting story of good triumphing over evil, and it doesn't require a lot of grim-and-gritty everyone-dies drama to do that.

If by the end of the new sequel trilogy all of the original trio had been killed off and a third of the new trio too, I'd call that shock value. It doesn't fit the tone of the series, and the way TFA was such a shout-out to ANH makes it seem clear they're trying hard to recapture that tone.

AS AN AUTISTIC PERSON...

I've seen one fic where it was heavily implied that Kylo was autistic that was pretty well done, but I don't think for a minute that he was intended to be coded autistic within the movie. Being "singleminded and obsessive" is how bad guys usually ARE in movies like this, and I also don't really think he was all that surprised that Rey wanted to kill him. He was surprised that she was so good at fighting. I do identify with the tantrums and the lack of eye contact--sometimes I want a giant face mask like that so I don't have to deal with how hard it is to have the right expressions on my face--but I think that's more about showing the effects of the Dark Side on him (uncontrolled rage, Force-induced telepathy, etc.) than a signpost to autism.

Re: EXPLAIN HOW....

Yeah, for some people having two characters not interact on-screen allows them to go wild with their headcanons, for others it makes them too wary to try writing their own version of that interaction because they don't have canon to riff off. Poe and Rey will interact in the next movie, I honestly can't imagine how they'd go another movie without meeting, so people might also be worried about getting Jossed, compared to writing for two characters who might never share screentime.

There's some really good meta on tumblr about much of this springing from the fact that Snoke has been in his head influencing him pretty much since birth, and that he fell under Snoke's complete control at 15. He's been being groomed by evil his whole life and that's hugely influenced his social development. I can't find the link but it goes into the effects of child-grooming on social development, and directly explains all of the above, particularly the violent acting out.

Re: Smoking in the FIrst Order (or in general... or is it General? OTL *bad pun*)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-02 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
1) Hux smoking is really hot. And for some reason it seems to fit his character as a vice--he wouldn't be that into alcohol because he's so controlled and alcohol makes you lose control, so he'd be into something that boosts productivity. Making him addicted to coffee is kind of mundane, and smoking is more of a bad habit but still not seen as totally taboo in our society. It's exotic and taboo enough to be sexy, but not the kind of thing that he'd get in trouble for.

2) It's kind of a trope that high-ranking officers (in movies and TV, at least) allow themselves small luxuries or contraband that are off-limits to the troops. Hux wouldn't be likely to indulge in something that inhibits his productivity, but he's not shown engaging in heavy combat in the movie--he strides around and tells people what to do. If he's not a heavy smoker and in good shape otherwise, it probably wouldn't have many immediate health effects that would make it difficult for him to perform his duties.

Whereas with a pairing like Mystrade, canon threw in a bone to support it without ever having them meet onscreen. "I don't just do what your brother tells me."

In no particular order,
- Luke training Rey
- Luke and Leia's reunion
- Either Finn/Poe or no romance at all for any of the main three. I know that Finn/Poe is never ever going to happen (and neither even is Poe even being openly presented as not-straight, though the intent of the actor does wonders), so really I guess I just mean no romance.
- If they want romance, give Chewie some romance. I can think of two perfectly good candidates without even trying.
- More Phasma!!
- MORE MAZ!!!
- Time for Rey, Finn, and Poe to interact as a trio
- More interaction between Hux and Kylo Ren. Do it, Disney. Feed my trash ship.
- Luke, Leia, and Chewie to all live through the movie. Also both the new trios. Kylo and Hux will almost certainly die before the end of the trilogy, but I'm hoping that won't be until 9.
- More badass Rey being badass.
- Kylo continues to struggle with the Light, but no redemption arc. Continues to get more fucked-up and unstable. (FEELS ARE WELCOME THOUGH, especially if 100% of this all happened due to Snoke fucking around in his head)
- Luke and Rey are related. This isn't really something I want to happen so much as something I think will happen.
- Force-sensitive Finn

Oh, and, as an anon above said,
- "A scene of Force-Ghost Anakin just looking at Kylo looking at his dented helmet and sighing exasperatedly."

This exactly! This whole post! There are tons of Earth terms alongside the tons of unique Star Wars stuff, and people who haven't been able to absorb the huge amounts of lore from decades of disparate sources shouldn't be... dogpiled on like this. They shouldn't even have to sustain one rude comment or snotty holier-than-thou correction.

Ugh. I love the prompts and fills in this kinkmeme, but this sense of entitlement people have is bizarre. Fic is written for free, people, out of love!

Plus, just to add an extra layer of irony to this whole mess, I looked at that wiki link from somewhere upthread (and some of its subpages), and not only am I seeing blatant Earth terms like churro, crab, lobster, wheat, and cabbage, I happened across this:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Potato

Lmao. Did... did no one who's been crying foul over the potatoes even bother to look on the wiki?

(Also this, which almost makes this whole fiasco worth it XD: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Darth_Tater )

There's also a chance it would lead to the White Savior trope. I know people were worried about it in TFA, and in the hands of the wrong director, having Rey come "liberate" him could play horribly wrong.

TFA was already much darker than the original trilogy, and I think that's based on today's movie audience's expectations. Han's deaths had way more emotional ramifications than Obi Wan or Yoda because we barely knew those characters.

It's been about 30 years since the OT and movie/TV tropes have changed a lot and unfortunately, killing characters is one of them. I think that at least one other character is going to die.
