At this point I am not even expecting feedback to fills anymore.

I think the one thing cool about Hux right now, other than his actor is cute, is that we still know very little about him. His screen time was like how many minutes?

So we could take whatever character we want from our own heads, and make him Hux. So Hux is as cool, dorky, a winner, a loser as the writers want.

Once he is more fleshed out, we might even see a drop in him getting written.

I liked the first fic and first part of the 2nd fic in that series. Then I lost interest.

Different headcanons for Hux. He either rises and rends all others to ashes, or fall and fall hard. A man who had committed atrocities as he had get no redemption.

I still feedback when I see something I like and lurk around the fills page/flat view of the current round. However I am way less likely to fill, especially anything from earlier rounds, as it goes almost completely unnoticed. Basically, if I'm not going to cross-post a fill, there's not much point to writing it at all. A lot of OPs have moved on, too.

Yet AO3 is still very much active? Ehhhh? And there are still quite a few tumblr organized events going on.

Times like these I miss LJ. Concentrate all our same fandom crap in one place.

Kinkmemes fill a very particular niche in fandom. The culture's pretty unique, as is the pace, as is the eventual drop in interest. Kinkmemes are butterflies, shiny and pretty and liable to drop dead soon after mating... I feel like this metaphor got away from me, but in a cool way. The point is, kinkmemes generate a lot of content, fast, and then die off and that's only to be expected, but still kind of melancholy.

I'm more interested in writing than prompting, and these days most of the prompts involve Kylo or Hux. Both Kylo and Hux bore me to death.

What are your favourite tropes? Why do you like them and do they feature heavily in your own writing?

Oh man, "viral transformation" and "horror hunger" are two of my favourites, with a side of literal "he who fights monsters." I love it when protagonists are unwillingly changed into monsterous creatures, and discover they crave the flesh of their closest friends and allies..! Add in some "body horror" or "tomato in the mirror" and I am the happiest camper!

However, I usually only use those tropes for my original fiction - in fanfic I tend to stick to "Face-Heel turn" and "villain has a point," with "not brainwashed" for drama.

Really, I just like good guys going bad~

Just my two cents, but the drop in feedback on meme hasn't much affected my motivation. I use the kinkmeme primarily for inspiration, and after a prompt catches my eye, it isn't any different from writing fic based off of my own ideas. At that point, it mostly comes down to my own determination to finish. The slowing down doesn't really affect me either, since I've saved lots of prompts from past rounds. Of course, that's just me - other people seem to have quite different experiences.

Me too, for most of these, though I have no idea what "tomato in the mirror" is supposed to be. I prefer it when they don't turn completely evil despite the transformation, but I'll take what I can get.

I don't suppose your original fiction is available anywhere to read, or that you have other recommendations for these tropes?

Humorous takes of depressive and dark themes. Bad guys as protagonists but not getting redeemed. Ineffective governments that are more incompetent and apathetic than purposefully evil that end up doing evil deeds.

AYRT: Nah, I keep my personal writing offline. I mostly just write for fun, so it's not really good enough to bother posting anywhere. I don't have any specific fics to link to you, unfortunately, but I've found a lot of transformation fic in the Harry Potter fandom, particularly under the Creature Fic tag on Ao3. Mostly though, it's a matter of stumbling through fandoms, following particular keywords (like parasite, infection, disease, etc) and hoping you get lucky. Obviously the easiest way to find "horror hunger" is to check out things tagged for cannibalism.

And "tomato in the mirror" is where a character discovers they are in fact a COPY of who they thought themselves to be, usually created by their supposed enemy. It's especially good when the character discovers this before their "allies," opening up the door for all kinds of mindfuckery.

personally, I haven't seen anyone who wanted or genuinely thought Elan would be Hux's canon name--more like, people who thought/hoped his first name wouldn't be revealed in canon, so they would be free to imagine whatever they wanted. (seriously, what's with all the hate on CWU/CWU fans? I'm not a big fan of the series myself--it's too much of a time commitment to read an ongoing fic of that length--but, like, I don't feel the need to insult the people who really enjoy it.)

I suspect that, as with all base-splitting fics, there is very strong characterisation. This characterisation will resonate with a bunch of people's fanon and also alienate a bunch of people's fanon. The only fics with interpretations that aren't controversial in some way are the ones with weak characterisation that any reader can squint at and go "yeah, that's pretty much how I see him/her/them/it". These are the fics that leave enough wiggle-room for the reader to see them through whatever interpretations they like. Again, nothing wrong with that kind of fic either, it's closer to the amount of info we get in canon.

I personally admire any fic that takes a strong stance on characters' interpretation though, even if I disagree with the characterisation (as I happen to with this series, but that's really beside the point). Regardless, it's a free fandom and I'd prefer to be part of the transformative side than the curative side any day.

You're right, Hux gives a lot of freedom as a character right now, I hope I didn't come off as trying to police other people's ideas - and I'm really happy with how much fanfiction there is about him. I guess if I'm not into cool!hux I'll have to search harder for evil/loser!hux or really write it myself.

(I hope he will be more fleshed out, especially with how much we've learned about him in the last book. If he dies in the first 10 minutes of ep VIII I'll scream aha)

Extroardinary characters in ordinary situations: someone plunked down where they really don't belong, and the resulting shenanigans of them realizing you can't go around claiming you're the High Warlock when you're actually in Brooklyn, you're gonna get asked questions you can't answer. Also, I personally am terrible at writing it, but I absolutely LOVE it when character A is pining over character B, and B is pining over A, completely oblivious to each other. I like it when the only thing preventing a relationship is the characters getting over themselves and realizing they care about each other, dammit. Finally I like it when characters have obscure hobbies/interests, like knitting or WoW or they play field hockey or anything random like that. Makes them feel more real.

I love identity porn, fuck-or-die, mirror-verses, and a sort of reversed xeno-kink where humans are considered weird by an alien view-point character. They definitely come up in my writing, but I absolutely love to see other people's takes on them.

Not sure why I like identity porn, but it's probably like knowing where the music's going. Tension, tension, chord resolves in a logically-following, but interesting way.

Fuck-or-die, possibly weirdly, is a character study thing for me? How does character x deal with completely a left-field situation. I love mornings after and the awkward interactions surrounding it.

Mirror-verses are about what stays the same and what changes in an alignment flip. Bubbly character is still bubbly, just while they're torturing puppies rather than cuddling them. Ruthless character is still ruthless, but now more self-sacrificing? Or maybe still sees people as pawns but is torn up about it?

Finally, reverse-xeno kink is both funny, but also seeing humans from the outside as cute, blunt-toothed practically herbivores or as ruthless killing machines that can come after you even when they've just lost a limb or a third of their blood volume fascinates me for some reason. Context!

Like using one of the Tumblr "filters" to block out rape and slave fills? I don't know if there is a certain way to do so here. On AO3 I just use "-rape" in the search bar, but there are quite a few here and seeing them makes me super uncomfortable. Is there like a Chrome app to do so or something fandom specific or site specific?

As a lesbian, written fandom FF smut is awful. "Lady Lips" and "Quivering womanhood" turned me off for years. The actual porn is so god awful you just know that it was written by a man. The same with how you know when gay porn is written by a 13 year old girl, the logistics of how sex works eludes them...

Eh, I have my reasons for disliking the fic (I did write up the whole list of reasons somewhere around here) but I would be glad to ignore it because YKINMK and that's okay and all. However, there are a lot of very... vocal fans of that series who just won't shut up about how that fic is the be-all and end-all of Kylux fic and constantly assume everyone just HAS to love it. The kind who basically goes "This fic is flawless and perfect and that is a FACT and not an opinion".
I guess I was just unlucky with that part of the fandom I was in, but this is one of the main reasons I'm so salty about it.
