It takes a real man to make a tender chicken.
People will sue you for anything these days.
I do not understand why people think this comment is so rude and snotty? Is it because they didn't use contractions?
the same way you don't?
I need this god damn book so hard. I am flat broke or I'd nut up and get the hardback. The library waiting list is three months long.
Time. 12 hour shifts with a 2 hour commute on crowded city transit don't leave much time for free thought.
That article is fascinating! Finn does have his own theme/motif in the music, because John was giddy about meeting John Williams and having one. It didn't get it's own track on the soundtrack which is a shame.

Does anyone have advice for improving writing? I would especially love fanfiction-specific recommendations (i.e. how to keep people in character, or balance assumed knowledge from canon with new information).
Why are you so obsessed with this? Jesus, chill.
There's so much advice out there, seeking it out and trying things is the first step in the right direction. You already have a positive mindset. Writing is a skill that you can develop. I think most fanfics would dramatically improve with better characterization and a conscious narrative choice.
For fanfiction, I write a character guide for important characters. I write a summary of their canon backstory, actions, motivations, body language, and dialogue. I keep it to explicit canon, not assumptions, or theories. Then I write a short description of the traits of their dialogue, maybe accompanying body language. Are they terse or chatty? Do they use 10-dollar words? Do they speak in sentences or paragraphs? And so on.
Writers choose their narrative voice, so do so consciously. I break it down for myself like this, but everyone has their own way:
-Consistency and logic are vital, unless there’s a significant reason to break with them. (There rarely is.)
I. Tenses.
A. Past tense. It’s a good old standard for a reason. It feels very natural to tell a story in a past tense. It’s also better at showing time shifts than present tense.
B. Present tense. It feels immediate and it’s becoming common. I find that it can work for smut, humor, mysteries, thrillers or romance. Though those stories could be written just as well, if not better, in the past tense. This is my opinion, I know present tense is trendy.
C. Future tense. Experimental purposes only.
II. Reliable or Unreliable Narrator.
A. Is the narrator telling the ‘truth’, as they know it, or not? Is the narrator even capable of telling the truth?
III. Narrator
A. Person:
i. Second person. Experimental purposes only.
ii. First-person. ‘I’, me, myself pronouns.
iii. Third-person. They, them, themselves pronouns.
B. Narrative Access: How much information can the narrator access and relay to the reader?
i. Omniscient. Usually done in Third-person. (First- person and Second-person omniscient would be fun to try.) All information is known to the narrator and will be relayed in turn to the reader. (Must be Reliable. A narrator that ‘lies’ is Not relaying the full story to the reader, therefore is not Omniscient, even if it may ‘know’ the full story. It’s some other beast.)
ii. Limited. All persons. It may have single or multiple point-of-view characters. The reader only has access to the information that the POVs have access to.
C. Narrative Distance. How much does the narrator filter? How much of the ‘internal’ narrative of the characters does the narrator show?
i. Omniscient.
a. No POV characters. Inherently ‘filtered’ narration (eg. He did x, She thought y).
b. Distant, bird’s eye view of events.
c. Omniscient is NOT head-hopping. The omniscient narrator is one voice only. It does not narrate events or thoughts in one character’s voice and then another’s without transitions (ie. Head-hopping) . And it is ‘filtered’ (eg. They saw x and that’s why they did y.) A single voice.
ii. Limited. All persons. Spectrum of experience relayed to the reader by the narrator.
a. External only. Only observable events are relayed. No internal narrative.
b. Internal Narrative Filtered. Narrator ‘filters’ the Internal experience (eg. She thought x, He heard y).
c. Internal Narrative Unfiltered. Narrator does not ‘filter’ the Internal experience. (Compare. The ‘filtered’ narrative: They thought it was cute and they would like to pet it. The ‘unfiltered’ narrative: It was cute. They would pet it.)

Come into my parlor, said the spider to the fly...
Snoke is a creepy motherfucker
Snoke is a creepy motherfucker
I'm just finishing writing a fill for the Kylo likes to roleplay as Anakin and Padme during sex prompt, yet I can't seem to find the original prompt. I was sure it was on round four, but I've ran through it multiple times and is not showing up. I bookmarked it. But in a different computer I won't have access to until at least Thursday night when I get back home.
Never mind, I was searching in the wrong round!
I'm mostly into Kylux right now because it hits all of my kinks, and because there's a lot of material for it. I'm also very into Skysolo on the side, but there's a lot less material for that that I actually enjoy.
In terms of rarepairs, I'll ship Phasma and pretty much any other woman. I'm here for dykey Phasma forever.

This is an excellent resource, thanks so much for this!
Thanks for the link.
However, it's easy to find the list of THINGS that are canon. Not so easy to figure out what EVENTS will be canon when more material comes out. Everything that has already "happened," until it is directly contradicted, could still be on the table.

True, thinks can be changed in the future. But I think that for now things like Clone Wars/Rebels are not going to be affected because those two things at least seem to currently be worked very closely with Disney and LucasFilm, and considering how tied in The Marvel Cinematic Universe is with the movies, TV series and Netflix series, I think Disney would be very on top of it.
If anything I would say the books and maybe the comics can be in a more grey area. But also, it seems even then at least Aftermath and Before the Awakening should be fine. And people connected events, characters from the Battle of Jakku as easter eggs from Battlefront in TFA, so I think for now that is also an accurate source.

Re: Appreciation Discussion/What are your favorite things about this meme?
(Anonymous) 2016-03-03 04:13 am (UTC)(link)I'm not sure that I've seen a prompt for their origin, but there was a prompt for Finn, as a janitorial stormtrooper, being among the most badass of stormtroopers because the trash-compactor ecosystem and inhabitants are some of the things they have to deal with.
Does anyone else look at Kylo Ren's command shuttle swooping about and get distracted from someone-is-about-to-be-visited-by-imminent-disaster by how very much it looks like a manta ray?
I just want to see a tank of them swooping about slowly, or photo-bombing tourists in the Caribbean.
(Why is there not a model ship petting tank at the aquarium? Maybe Dr. Evil has replaced the highly irritated seabass with something that actually has lasers...)
