Ah bringing different people together.

And we all know what that means. Different people together > war, war, flamewar!

But at least LJ had communities that sort of organized and segregated the different sections of fandom. I still find it easier to navigate than tumblr, slightly less time wasting because there no 'oh this got reblogged on my dash again'.

Tumblr at times feel like ADHD spazz to me. Great for art blogging, not so much for discussions. People click more and talk less. I wonder what the next platform would look like.

Oh, I'm not at all saying anyone can't do anything. I'm just responding specifically to that stereotype. The fact is that none of these stereotypes would matter if Finn weren't the ONLY black person and Jessika weren't the ONLY Asian person--if there were five of each, then writing one particular character as whatever stereotype would not have much weight, because there would be theory characters who are other things. So at the end of the day, you have to understand that when people are upset, the root of the problem is really because they're tired of having extremely marginal representation and being very protective of what little they have--it's not really about X fic writer specifically.

I went on a following spree for a couple TFA pairings and now the suggested tumblrs are all only one pairing. I have other fandoms too! How do I find tumblrs to follow for other stuff to, um. Bring balance to my dash.

This is my headcanon, particulatly since he's replacing whatever family name he had (Solo, Organa, Organa-Solo, Solo-Organa, Solorgana, Organsolo, Gorganzola) with his new dark family's name.

I was at a fandom specific meetup where someone brought vintage Kirk/Spock zines from the 60s. Most of us were "old", for fan types, late 20s-30s. So old enough that we've been around for a while, but not old enough for printed zines. They were really cool to see, and it was funny watching everyone handle the books so reverently, like sacred ancient texts.

Fandom is a subculture, there are official archives of fanculture being preserved. It's weird when you're in it to think of it like a cultural movement, but it's changed modern media so much.

Fandom used to be hidden away, no one knew about it, no one talked about it, and no one but other fans listened to it's opinions. Now showrunners and film makers are making changes to what they create based on fandom response.

It's happened before, when original ACD Sherlock Holmes fans insisted Holmes not be dead after Reichenbach, and I'm sure fans of Shakespeare might have influenced his work as well, particularly if they were rich or influential, but it's like fandom has gone from a subculture to a mainstream culture in less than a century. You can't find a network tv channel that doesn't have at least one sci-fi or superhero or fantasy influenced show now.

And it might seem silly to be weirdly proud of that, but where one subculture can come out and become accepted by the mainstream, it can sometimes be a weird little source of hope for other subcultures.

1) well someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

2) it's not new to you or me, but in a shocking twist new people come to fandom who have legit never heard this kind of discussion before. it absolutely is necessary to talk about imo.
