There's such a thing as unconscious bias. Some people think "is capable of saying no very firmly" is a merit in a man and a fault in a woman, but they're not deliberately trying to be sexist when they have that in mind.

Depends on what you define as merit. Job fit, general corporate culture fit, first impressions, stage of life, more trusted references, did you forget to zip your pants - yes I have seen this at an interview once, the guy was otherwise quite qualified. Wasn't hired.
It is simply annoying when people go out of their way to depict/avoid depicting certain characters certain ways because stereotypes. Write them as characters in their scenarios with some degree of logic and common sense. Write them to the best of your abilities without purposefully seeking to rile and offend. And that should be enough. Sometimes I feel the super sensitivity is offensive in itself, and often hurts its own cause.
Maybe I am just sad more people are spending time attacking others than producing content themselves or enjoying life. But then maybe attacking others is a life enjoyment?

Madeline books. The book where Madeline gets appendicitis was my first dose of whump and h/c and I've never looked back. I was five. I was writing/drawing little stories about Miss Clavelle and the girls at the boarding school getting captured by criminals and Madeline rescuing the shit out of everyone, but getting horrifically injured and nearly dying in the process and needing to be hospitalized.

You don't get to judge when people in a group you don't have lived experience of are being "too" sensitive, though. And if your commitment to the cause of anti-oppression an be hurt by being annoyed by a few overly sensitive people, then you were never really committed to the cause anyway.
