What was everyone's first fandom? How old were you? What made you go search out fandom or fic? I"m always really interested to see how people stumble across fandoms.
I wrote my first Star Wars story at age 12 or 13, back in the mid-90s, so it was definitely one of my first fandoms. I wrote it because I loved the movies so much and wanted more. At the time I wasn't even aware of the term "fan fiction," since I wasn't really using the Internet then.
Me too! I saw the movies for the first time when I was 10 and started writing my own fanfic without even know what fanfic or fandom was. I kept them all in one of those cheao spiral notebooks.
I remember being so happy when I found Star Wars novels in the bookstore that were side stories or continuations of what happened after RotJ.
Yes! I would read any of the novels, no matter the quality, and I had all those character/planet/alien/droid/vehicle guides. x) It absolutely astounded me that there were so many Star Wars books!
I vaguely remember one of the novels being about Han and Leia going on a date to some virtual reality of Alderaan. IIRC, most of the novels weren't written that well. Not that it's too surprising since the novelization of TFA is pretty poorly written.
Mine was Harry Potter back around... 2000 or so? I stumbled across fanfiction by accident and woops, never turned back. :3 I'm also an old veteran of the Ron/Hermione vs Harry/Hermione ship wars and find it more than a little exhausting to wade through wank about Star Wars ships these days. (Maybe I'm just too much of a fandom granny to want to put up with that element anymore.)
HP fandom veteran here, too! As a former H/H (~pumpkin pie~) shipper, I totally agree that HP fandom exhausted me for ship wars and I didn't even participate in any back int he day. I don't have the energy to deal with ship wank anymore and just stick to my pairings and let everyone else fight about whose ship is better. To be honest, I sometimes find meta and manifestos for ships I enjoy to be exhausting.
Though, ngl, I was annoyed when JKR released that statement a year or two ago about how she felt the endgame ships should have been different. Way to revive decades old wank.
Yep. Harry Potter. I can tell when fandom started for me. I remember we had internet at home, with okayish speed for that time, but I never did much with it. Then...THEN I got the book with interesting websites about Harry Potter. (Somebodyelse remember when books with webadresses were a thing?) And there was a section with fanfic archives in it. FF.net with the stunning amount of 50.000 fics...and the rest is history. I still have this book :-)
Funny thing: From my late teens into my mid twenties was I worried because I never adopted a subculture like punk, goth, metal or what not You know like reckless youth is suposted to do. Than fanfiction started to get attention form the mainstream media... Then I realized: I had been part a subculture along!!! I know this! Been there, done that! That was a real relief for me!
Technically, Star Wars was my first fandom. I was born a few years after RotJ came out, so SW was still a big thing for my parents. A lot of kids at school grew up talking about those movies since, in the early to mid '90s, we didn't really have any new franchises to bond over. Even YA books weren't really that huge until HP came out.
But, when I saw Star Wars was my first fandom, I mean that I wrote fic and headcanoned about the characters by myself and with friends without knowing about fandom.
My first official fandom was Harry Potter. I stumbled onto it by accident. I was searching for the publication date of GoF and ended up finding a MSN community for Harry Potter that had posted a bunch of Harry/Draco fic. That's how I learned about slash and fic and fandom and I've never turned back.
Probably Naruto in like 2005 lol. My first fic I ever wrote was definitely for Naruto. I was into Harry Potter before that but I didn't take part in any fandom activities until way later.
Space Cases! It was essentially Star Trek Jr. with a budget of about, eh, eighty bucks, and I adored it. The first fic I ever read was VLegend's "Bell, Book, Candle." Classic Suefic where a literal goddess manifests herself in order to train her true love to use his previously-unknown powers to defeat the bad guy forever and live happily ever after, the end. I thought it was the most moving, powerful thing I'd ever read and was inspired to write my own story, except my OC was even SMARTER and PRETTIER and MORE GOOD AT EVERYTHING than VLegend's was. Even though I'd been really into space and astronomy as a kid, I didn't really make the jump from Space Cases to other sci-fi, because I think my next fandom after that was Pokemon, where I was a devoted Rocketshipper.
I was a little young to be super-into the OT when my family first got a computer with internet access in 1997, although I do remember my younger brother absolutely adored The Phantom Menace, with its thrilling pod race sequence and lovable, wacky Jar-Jar Binks. My best friend from high school was pretty into the Jedi Apprentice books and shipped Obi-Wan/Her OC, but idk, I liked ~anime (because it's not for kids!!! It's a superior artform and ohgod I was such a stupid weeaboo) and Star Wars just wasn't my thing. And here I am now.
Harry Potter, early 2000s, I was about 10? I stumbled upon a drarry fic on quizzilla or something and my gay little heart was hooked. I ended up lurking on lj for years. Then I got heavily into sga and went through the super old k/s archives. I was thrilled when the 2009 Star Trek movie came out, that was my first exposure to kink memes. I distinctly remember skipping school because I'd woken up at 7 am to find someone had posted a 30k fic while I was asleep
I've been in a range of fandoms from dbz, to mcu, to the dark days of Sherlock, to teen wolf, lotr, the hobbit, Naruto, ect. This is actually my first time getting into Star Wars, but I can already tell it's going to be one of my all time top fandoms, I'm already planning my bb-8 tattoo
My first fandom before I knew what fandom is was Star Trek. My first love <3 I guess I was 10, 12 when I first got into it?
Later as a teenager it became the first fandom I was heavily and long-time invested in, too, with internet activity, reading fanfics, shipping, the whole deal.
Probably Star Wars. I watched ESB in middle school and handwrote a long fanfiction in a notebook, where Luke, Leia, and Leia's kids with Han all got kidnapped and Han and Chewie had to save them. So much kidnapping. I was about 11 or 12.
Madeline books. The book where Madeline gets appendicitis was my first dose of whump and h/c and I've never looked back. I was five. I was writing/drawing little stories about Miss Clavelle and the girls at the boarding school getting captured by criminals and Madeline rescuing the shit out of everyone, but getting horrifically injured and nearly dying in the process and needing to be hospitalized.
