[Fill] Kylo/Mitaka
(Anonymous) 2016-03-07 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)Kill him.
No, no, I like him.
Okay, then suck his dick.
Neither of those responses are helpful.
Look, Master Kylo, I’m kind of in an incredibly delicate situation involving flightless birds, a diamond made from the ashes of Padme Amidala, you’re welcome by the way, and I can’t really talk. Mandryka probably isn’t busy, you could ask him about this guy. But for the record, I stand by both my responses. They’ve worked for me.
Yes I know. Go back to your birds and the diamond and I really want to know how those birds got my grandmother’s ash-diamond when you have a moment to think.
Later then, they’re really angry with me.
Mandryka, are you busy?
No, I’m in hyperspace, what is it?
I have a bit of a problem, and Zdenka said you might be free.
She was right, I’m on my way to meet up with Djura, she’s got a lead on that map to Skywalker. But it’ll be a good four more hours before I’m there. What can I help you with?
Just don’t answer like Zdenka, she was incredibly unhelpful.
Master, Zdenka and I are very different people, you know this.
I do. Alright, there’s this man.
You’ve got the lightsaber, scare him into doing what you want. Easy.
See, that’s the problem. He isn’t scared of me, or my lightsaber. Well, he is, but he keeps being the one to deliver me bad news anyway. He’s so brave and oddly cute?
Use protection.
Mandryka!
What?
Never mind. Neither you nor Zdenka have been helpful.
Sorry. But I don’t really have any context.
A moment passed where images and memories were shared from one mind to the next, and Kylo sat in anxious anticipation, unsure of what his Knight would think of the Lieutenant who had wormed his way into his heart.
Oh he’s adorable.
Relief flooded through Kylo. He is. And I’m finding myself oddly fond of him. But I have no idea what to do. I have feelings, Mandryka, feelings.
You say as if I know how to deal with mine any better than you. Djura and I have a city to work our way through, and you know her feelings about our struggles in the romantic and sexual.
She has better things to do with her time, yes I know.
Jankel and Welko might be able to help, they’ve had to pretend to be married while in Republic space that one time.
Jankel and Welko will actually kidnap this man and space him if he doesn’t return my feelings.
At least it means they like you?
Much as I hate to say it, Lamoral might be helpful.
Yes. Talk to Lamoral. If Jankel and Welko get upset that you didn’t tell them, I’ll handle it.
Thank you Mandryka, you’ve actually been helpful.
Oh Master, you have to give me a moment to just savor this.
Lamoral.
Kylo Ren, my master, coming to me for help in wooing an officer.
Lamoral.
Shh. Let me have this.
Lamoral I will personally break both your legs.
Right. Okay. So, this man is both absolutely adorable and incredibly brave. He’ll be good for you.
I’m not asking if he’d be good for me.
We need a plan of attack.
We?
I fully plan on taking the memory from you so I can see the success.
Lamoral.
You just take the fun out of everything, you know that? Okay, so from what I know, you should give him gifts. You could just peek in and see what he likes, right? Or next time you’re on a mission you could pick up something special.
Zdenka is getting my grandmother’s ash-diamond.
That’s perfect! Get that from her, and then give it to your man. It’ll be perfect.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but thank you Lamoral.
“Tell me you’re going to suck his dick.”
“Zdenka, just give me the diamond.”
“Promise me you’ll suck his dick.”
“Fellatio will be performed at some point to some party.”
“Wow, way to get around saying the word dick. Here’s your grandma.”
“Thank you.”
“Lieutenant Mitaka,” said that awful modulated voice behind him, and Dopheld jumped in surprise to hear it so suddenly. Turning from his meal he saw Lord Ren there, staring him down. What had he done wrong?
“Yes, sir?” he asked, willing his voice to be steady. He could see plenty other officers smirking at his misfortune, and even a few trying not to laugh.
“Follow me.” With that, the Knight of Ren turned and stalked out of the mess hall, robes swirling around him. There was nothing for it, he’d have to go. Making momentary eye contact with Thanisson (at least he never was part of that plot to stick Dopheld with always delivering bad news to Ren, that made him better than most of Dopheld’s peers), he stood and followed the Knight, disposing of his tray of food as he went.
Ren took him to an entirely abandoned corner of the ship and Dopheld braced himself, willing himself to be strong in the face of whatever this whole situation was. At least whatever happened to him wouldn’t be public, he had that going for him at least. But when Ren turned around suddenly, Mitaka froze having nearly crashed into him.
Staring into that faceless mask with as much poise as he could muster, Dopheld was entirely surprised when Ren took his wrist in his hand and held his hand palm up. Staring now, he saw a beautiful pendant being pressed into his hand with a large, beautiful diamond set into it, surrounded by smaller diamonds. Was he to deliver this somewhere?
“This is the ash-diamond pendant of Senator Padme Amidala from Naboo,” said Ren. Dopheld’s eyes grew larger. He didn’t know who that was, but now he knew that he was holding the remains of a woman. Kylo had effectively pressed a dead woman into his hands. He couldn’t manage a response, staring at the pendant and waiting for orders to come. “I want you to keep it, Lieutenant, not deliver it anywhere.”
“Why?” squeaked Dopheld, still staring at the thing. It was beautiful, and he didn’t understand why Ren was entrusting him with some woman’s remains. “Sir.”
Ren’s hands were raising up then, and Dopheld tried his hardest not to cower, he knew what a choke from the Force was like, he could only imagine what both hands were needed to do. But no Force enclosed around his neck, no, even worse, Kylo Ren was releasing the catch on his helmet. It fell with a loud noise leaving Dopheld staring into a surprisingly young and handsome man. Kylo Ren was younger than Hux, even!
“Senator Padme Amidala of Naboo was my grandmother,” said Ren, his voice oddly soft. And what exactly was that look on his face? “She was a very brave woman. She was Queen of Naboo at age fourteen, you know, and became Senator when her term was up. She was also the dearest love of Darth Vader, my grandfather.” Everything fell into place then, and he had about a thousand protests to make, but he didn’t get a chance to say a word. “You’re incredibly brave, Dopheld, you’re the only person on this ship who will speak to me when I’m lost in my rages, don’t think I haven’t noticed that. Your fellow officers haven’t noticed that about you, the more their loss. You deserve better than the derision of these…nobodies. Let me give that to you. I’ll give you the stars.”
Dopheld stared up at Ren, unsure of how to respond. But there was such earnest hope in Ren’s face, and Dopheld was almost afraid to say anything in case he fell victim to that awful choking again. “This…is a bit of a shock,” he finally managed.
“I understand. But do think on it?” Dopheld barely managed to nod before Ren was taking his free hand and placing an awfully gallant kiss to his knuckles then, before replacing his helmet and walking away. Dopheld stood there, holding the remains of Kylo Ren’s grandmother and his ears ringing with declarations of love and just stared at the grey wall directly in front of him, almost hoping words would appear on it, telling him what to do. How in all the kriffing hells did one respond to a Knight of Ren declaring his love by giving you his own grandmother?
How did it go?
I think it went really well, actually.
Can I be best man at your wedding? Considering I did get you together.
Lamoral.

Re: [Fill] Kylo/Mitaka
(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 07:17 am (UTC)(link)I have to confess, I was quite confused at the begininng. It just hadn't crossed my mind that he might be talking to the other knights of Ren, so I thought - well, first I thought Mitaka was the dork chasing after the birds, to be honest. And then I thought it must be some personnel from the Finalizer. And then the 'master' bit sunk in and I thought ... maybe holocrons of deceased force users? And then it all clicked into place and was glorious.
His knights are supportive and utterly clueless, but it does not matter because they've kind of got the right idea anyway. Except none of the specifics. *facepalm* Which meant I was both dying of embarrassment before Kylo had hardly opened his mouth and ... completely empathizing with the fact that he'd known he didn't know how to do this, tried to get help, and just. None of the people he asked knew how to human normally either. It was adorable.
I just wish there was more. Thank you so much for filling this, anon.Re: [Fill] Kylo/Mitaka
(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 07:43 am (UTC)(link)[Fill] Kylo/Mitaka (PART 2)
(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 12:13 am (UTC)(link)“What have you done to Lord Ren?” asked Thanisson, staring as the Knight swept away after actually stopping to greet Mitaka.
“I don’t understand myself,” sighed the Lieutenant in question.
“Is this something to do with when he took you out of the mess hall?” Mitaka nodded, looking absolutely retched. Thanisson usually hated that he never seemed to have grown to look any older than twelve, but it was times like this he was grateful for it. Lord Ren left him alone at least. “What exactly happened?”
“He gave me his grandmother’s ash-diamond then started saying he loved me.”
“He-wha-hasn’t he choked you like six times?”
“Actually only twice, but it sticks with you.” Thanisson’s hand reached up protectively towards his own throat without thinking, and nodded his understanding. They were taught how to get out of actual chokeholds at the Academy, but one from the Force? The thought of receiving one of those was frightening and Thanisson was glad again he still hadn’t managed to get his adult face yet.
“So now he’s trying to woo you?”
“I think? I told him I’d think about it.”
“I’d say turn him down but you might get chopped up like those consoles.”
“Thank you, Thanisson.” Mitaka did look absolutely miserable, and Thanisson clapped him on the shoulder and said,
“Best of luck, Mitaka.” Thanisson wasn’t a gossipmonger, and Mitaka had to take a small amount of comfort in that.
Dopheld shared his room with three other Lieutenants, and there was a general understanding that none of them messed with each other’s belongings. A holo of someone’s mother certainly wasn’t going to be messed with and uniforms were so desperately important that no one was going to touch those. It was nice, having that agreement, because no matter if they liked each other or not (and so few people actually did like him) it was somewhere safe.
And Dopheld found that safe space suddenly violated when he returned to his bunk at the end of the day to find two of the other Lieutenants holding Senator Padme Amidala of Naboo’s ash-diamond. No matter where he got it from, that was his and to have it suddenly taken made helpless frustration bubble up in him with a vengeance.
“Put that down!” he snapped, drawing their attention.
“You know we aren’t allowed luxuries like this, Mitaka,” said one of them, Phineas Magellan. “We should report you for this.”
“It was a gift, give that back!”
“A gift? From who?” asked the other, Stanislas Bourbon.
“It doesn’t matter, it’s none of your business! That is a woman’s ash-diamond, you need to treat it with respect!” They were supposed to be past this, thought Mitaka helplessly. They were supposed to be mature adults by now, not taking each other’s belongings and taunting each other. He thought he left that behind at the Academy.
“Who gave you an ash-diamond as a gift?” laughed Magellan. Dopheld didn’t know how to say anything without telling them it came from Lord Ren, and he didn’t want that out. He felt his face color and his fists balled in directionless anger, but then the two froze entirely, and couldn’t seem to move. There was distress in their eyes at that, and Dopheld didn’t understand what was going on.
Behind him the door opened and he whirled around, ready to defend that he had no idea what was going on, and saw none but Kylo Ren there. “Are you alright?” he asked. Dopheld merely nodded vaguely, unsure what else to do. The Knight turned his attention to the other two Lieutenants and saw what they held. Staring them down he said, “You will lay the pendant on Dopheld’s bed and you will go to sleep immediately afterwards. You will not remember what has happened.”
Immediately Magellan placed the pendant on the bed as Bourbon climbed into his bed, Magellan close behind. Soon as they lay down they fell asleep immediately, Magellan’s snorting snores filling the room. “I…thank you,” said Dopheld. “How did you manage that? Sir?”
“Please don’t call me sir,” said Ren, removing the helmet to reveal his face. Still as jarringly young and handsome as it had been last time. “It’s a Force trick. They’ll not remember a thing.”
“And how did you know to…” he couldn’t bring himself to finish it. How did you know to come rescue me like I was some damsel in a children’s story?
“You’re not a damsel,” said Ren. “You’re incredibly brave and you practice more restraint than those two obviously do. It’s an admirable quality, not sinking to their level. I could feel your anger and frustration.”
“You could feel it?”
“Of course. I keep you in my mind just as much as any of my Knights. You are very dear to me, Dopheld, I thought you knew that. I know this is probably not the best time, but I couldn’t find you alone before, but have you thought of what I told you?”
Beyond that Thanisson said that if I turned you down I’d be slashed up like a console? Beyond that I’ve been choked by you before and I’m terrified you’ll do it to me again and actually kill me if I ever do anything to displease you? thought Dopheld wildly, not thinking about how Ren had already answered to his thoughts before.
To his surprise, Ren actually looked something near ashamed at the thoughts and said, “Dopheld, I wouldn’t hurt you. I may have in the past, yes, but I would never from here on. If you were ever in danger from me, my Knights would protect you. Mandryka already loves you for my sake, and Lamoral besides. Zdenka is already…invested, and Jenkel and Welko want nothing more than to meet you. Djura, not so much, she always thought matters of the heart a waste of time in the face of the Order’s pursuits and the Knights’ pursuit of Skywalker, but even she’s said she’s curious about you.”
Dopheld felt vaguely ill. All the Knights of Ren so interested in him? Their master in love with him? What could he say?
“This was a bad time. I hope you can find it in you to forgive me,” said Ren. His hand reached up to brush fondly against Dopheld’s jaw as he spoke. “Goodnight. Sleep well, those two won’t bother you again tonight.”
With a smile, Ren replaced his helmet and Dopheld left alone, stunned and without words.
Master, you’re clogging up the Force.
My apologies, Djura.
Please just resolve this business with your man, if I have to spend one more dream focused on this man I am going to scream.
He’s thinking about what I’ve told him, it’s going to take him time.
You seem incredibly certain he’ll accept.
I’m hopeful he’ll accept.
Best of luck, master. But speed it up, please.
“I’m away to the Apse Nebula,” said Kylo the next time he managed to find Dopheld alone. “The Supreme Leader is sending me there. There’s a small planet there, I can’t tell you any more, though. But I couldn’t leave without seeing you.”
“When do you leave?” asked Dopheld.
“Almost at once. I will ask only one thing of you. Will you consider my offer while I’m gone?” Dopheld nodded, and behind his mask, Kylo grinned. His hand reached up to run fondly along his Lieutenant’s jaw, soaking in all he could of the man he loved before bowing elegantly to him, bidding him farewell with the gesture before going to his shuttle.
There was no time to think of anything else but the mission, but he liked to entertain the idea of what he could bring his Lieutenant.
Master, you can’t bottle stardust.
Thank you Welko, I had no idea.
I only mean that you can’t possibly bring anything from the Apse Nebula.
An absolute goldmine of wisdom, Welko, where did Master Snoke find you?
A boring farming planet, that’s where. And I don’t appreciate the sarcasm, you’re the one thinking about what you can bring your Lieutenant.
I don’t actually plan on bringing Dopheld anything, I will be a bit busy otherwise to think much of it. But thank you for trying to help.
Whenever Kylo Ren was gone, the entire ship functioned better and everyone just usually felt better. Dopheld was usually first and foremost in that. But this time, he sat cross-legged on his bunk while the other three slept around him, and stared at the ash-diamond.
Kylo Ren, the Supreme Leader’s own apprentice and grandson to Darth Vader had given him this to declare his love. His love! This wasn’t something he could just ignore and hope it went away. One couldn’t ignore Kylo Ren. He kind of made that impossible. Lord Ren had declared his love and then given him his grandmother’s ash-diamond.
In a morbid way, that was almost romantic. Thinking of Lord Ren as romantic, though, was so incredibly wrong on a visceral level that he couldn’t help the instinctual shudder that passed through him.
To accept Lord Ren’s love was to entangle himself in the business of the Force. To certainly bring the attention of the Knights of Ren unto himself and possibly even that of the Supreme Leader himself. But to deny Lord Ren’s love was to hang a target on his back that loudly announced itself to certainly the Knights of Ren and possibly even the Supreme Leader himself. Neither option seemed attractive.
But Lord Ren had promised to give him the stars, to protect him when he couldn’t protect himself, had promised that the Knights would be his protectors as well. Lord Ren believed Dopheld brave and strong and decent and above nearly everyone else on the ship. Better than Bourbon who people liked and better than Magellan who was considered a genius. Mitaka wasn’t liked by anyone, Thanisson was the closest he had to a friend and even that was mostly just a passing acquaintance. He was very good at his job, his commission on the Finalizer proved that, but that didn’t match with anything Lord Ren had told him.
He had to admit, even as unnerved as he was by the man, having such a positive regard was rather nice.
There was no answer to be had, not tonight, and Dopheld sighed, simply laying down to sleep. Morning would come too soon otherwise. When he drifted off, he found himself in an oddly lucid dream. He hated lucid dreams, and nearly made himself wake up, but for that he was drifting in space and looking at nebula. It was like a dome over him, glowing purple and blue with bright spots of giant stars within it. He had never seen anything like it, and found himself as usual unable to simply admire it as if it were art and instead began to analyze it.
He identified what gases must be in it to create that color, and was just starting to measure it when a voice told him, “The Apse nebula is three lightyears across.” He startled and turned to see Lord Ren there, without mask and just as unbothered by floating in the vacuum of space. “Do you see that blue giant? There’s a planet in orbit there, that’s where I am.”
“Are you sending me this dream?”
“Yes. I can’t bring you with me and I can’t bring anything back, but I can give you this, let you see it. Did you know of this nebula?”
“Passing familiar, I studied it in the Academy once. But that was just data, I never got to see it. It’s a star nursery, I thought.”
“And it is. The planet I’m on is nothing more than a rock. No atmosphere, no life. I can’t leave my ship without a respirator. You said you studied this nebula. What else did you study? You’re navigations, I thought.”
Maybe because it was a dream, but Mitaka felt more at ease than he had in a long time as he said, “I am, yes, but that means we need to know galactic geography. Nebulas are important for that.” And before he knew it, floating in the void of space with Kylo Ren, Mitaka was talking excitedly about his old studies. He liked his job, but he had been incredibly happy being a student. Dealing with the other cadets, not so much. But the intellectual, yes. Ren even seemed interested, his head cocked slightly and a smile on his face.
“How has anyone ever overlooked you?” Ren finally said, voice soft. Mitaka blushed heavily at that, suddenly aware that he had just started ranting about geography and how one of his teachers had spent at least an hour telling about the danger of the Ellian Supervoid. “I mean it. You’re brave, upright, and so blindingly smart…”
“It’s just Academy courses,” he muttered.
“It’s more than I had. I left regular schooling when I was ten to study the Force exclusively, and you don’t learn these things there. Compared to me, you’re a genius. I still spell things wrong. If it weren’t for datapads correcting mistakes, I’d be the laughingstock of the order. Especially ‘necessary.’ I can never get that one right.”
“It’s necessary to have one collar and two sleeves,” said Mitaka helpfully. “That’s how I remembered it when I was younger. One C and two S’s.” And then the blush got worse, embarrassment coursing through him for teaching Lord Ren spelling tricks.
But Lord Ren was smiling at him and saying with all honest intents, “Thank you, Dopheld. I should let you sleep, I know that. But I wanted to give this to you. I’m to return in four days, I won’t bother you until then, I promise.” And with that, the lucidity vanished, leaving Dopheld to his usual dreams.
Re: [Fill] Kylo/Mitaka (PART 2)
(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 01:52 am (UTC)(link)I love that Mitaka's still hesitant about the whole thing - it's a completely understandable reaction, especially since Kylo and the other Knights are pretty much wildcards (and then there's Snoke oh god). I also really like that Kylo keeps tabs on Mitaka without interfering, apologizes for his previous behavior, allows Mitaka the time to process things, and is just so utterly charmed by Mitaka, what an adorable nerd. Also fucking hell I love your take on the Knights, what a bunch of snarky asshole dorks.
And that last bit just made me wibble, oh boys, bonding via lucid dreams. Poor Mitaka. Poor Kylo. I just want to gather them up and hug them and feed them cupcakes.
*HUGS* Thank you so much for continuing with this, author anon, it's just so lovely and wonderful. Really looking forward to what's next!

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)I'm glad that Mitaka is taking the time to consider the options. I can completely understand his apprehension. Also the dream bonding was very cute. Is it wrong that Kylo confessing he can't spell well made me feel a bit sad for him? There must be so much that he missed due to force training at such a young age. Well, I guess if Mitaka says yes, he can help him with any learning he might want to do.
I'm so eager for the last part; thank you for filling this so majestically.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 10:37 am (UTC)(link)[Fill] Kylo/Mitaka (PART 3/EPILOGUE)
(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 01:35 am (UTC)(link)That was quite a heavy sigh in the Force, Jankel, is everything alright?
Everything’s fine. I’m just despairing for the state of this galaxy. You’re the most powerful man in the Galaxy after Master Snoke, you’ve got ancestry people only dream of, and here we are hoping a Lieutenant will look at you.
Do you think he will?
He better. He’ll regret it for the rest of his life if he doesn’t.
I showed him a vision of the Apse Nebula, and he started talking about them, he learned about them in the Academy. Did you know the colors are from types of gases?
Really?
I didn’t know that. And there are so many different kinds and he just knows them! He didn’t have to read off notes or anything, he just knew it.
Master you’re in love.
Yes, we already established that. Oh, you’ll find this useful. Apparently “necessary” has one C and two S’s. It’s necessary to have one collar and two sleeves. Dopheld taught that to me. He didn’t even laugh that I can’t spell.
Oh that’s a brilliant trick. Do you think he has any more of those?
Probably.
Learn them. Then teach them to me. I had to actually write something last week. By hand. I haven’t had to do that since I was ten! They didn’t laugh when I misspelled “Professor,” only one F, by the way, but I could feel that they were amused that I couldn’t spell. Didn’t get an excuse to kill them though. Shame.
I’ll pass on whatever I learn, I promise.
The message stared Dopheld in the face, and he couldn’t manage to get his mind off it, even when he focused on his job above everything else. It sat in the back of his mind, insistent, and he didn’t know what to do with it. No one else knew about it, of course, but he had the horrible sensation that they would if he read it in public. So, he didn’t open it again until the others in his room were asleep, idly letting the light from the datapad sparkle on the ash-diamond as he read it again, wondering at each line.
Dearest Dopheld,
I turned off the spell correcter, so don’t laugh. I found it necessary to write to you. I remember that I said I wouldn’t bother you, but leters seem less personel than sharing dreams. I know you said you would think of my offer, and I don’t want to make you say anything before you really can think about it, so don’t think you have to write me back.
My bisness is done, and I am coming back. Lamoral, one of my Knights, he always wants to talk about you. The Knights of Ren talk with our minds, almost all the time. And when I talk to Lamoral, he always asks “How is Dopheld? When can we meet him?” I told Jankel about your trick for spelling necessary and he wants to know if you have any other tricks? I told my Knights not to come to your dreams, so if you tell me, I can pass it on. I want to know for me as well, thoh.
I miss you very much, and I am ecsited to see you again. I will see you soon.
Kylo
Folding his lips as he read and reread the message, Dopheld found himself pressing the reply button and began to write a response, despite himself.
Kylo,
I think it’s very brave that you would write to me without spell corrector. I promise, I’m the last person who would laugh at you. You are right, a letter is much less personal than sharing a dream, but I admit I was almost afraid the rest of the personnel onboard would find this, it’s easier to hack into a datapad than into someone’s mind.
I have been thinking of your offer, but I can’t tell you anything now. Maybe when you come back from your business, though. (There’s a trick for Jankel. Business is filled with busy-ness. I had to use that one a lot when I was young)
Things have been very different on the Finalizer without you, when you’re gone people notice.
Dopheld
He wrote me!
Who did?
Who do you think I’m talking about, Lamoral? Dopheld!
This is good! Really good!
He said he might have a response when I get back.
A single exclamation of joy burst across the Force, something that drew the other Knights in to ask what was going on, until it was a complete babble of voices, seven all trying to talk at once about Dopheld Mitaka’s letter. By circumstance it was hard to actually make themselves heard, but eventually Djura managed to make herself heard as she said, Master, I’m happy for you. I really am. I’m glad this is working out for you. But I said it before and I’ll say it again. Resolve this, because I am dead tired of dreaming about your man because you can’t keep it under control.
You know what, Djura, I think it’s sweet.
You know what, Welko, I don’t care.
It took two days after Ren got back to the Finalier before Dopheld saw him anywhere approaching privately. At least Ren had learned that privacy was important. He didn’t want this coming out anywhere where there could be those who could eavesdrop. There was an upside and a downside to the fact that due to sheer size they couldn’t actually have a security tape absolutely everywhere. The upside was it was actually relatively easy to get privacy due to large blind spots in the ship’s monitoring system. The downside was large blind spots in the ship’s monitoring system.
But today Dopheld was focused on the upside to that. Ren didn’t even seem to think about it, removing his helmet as soon as they were alone. There was such a look of hope on his face that Dopheld understood exactly why he always wore the mask.
“I missed you,” said Ren.
Dopheld took a breath and said, “You told me you loved me. And I said I had to think about it. Because you kind of said it out of nowhere. I was pretty sure it was just a prelude to you actually killing me.”
“Dopheld–”
“Please let me finish. I don’t think I can say this again if you stop me.” Ren closed his mouth then, and simply nodded, watching him with intense dark eyes. “You gave me your grandmother’s ash-diamond, and you snuck into my dream to show me the Apse Nebula in person. You’ve asked me to give you and your Knights tricks for knowing how to spell. Two weeks ago you were absolutely terrifying and I never wanted to spend more than one second in your company.”
“And now?”
Dopheld took another breath. Kylo Ren didn’t always stalk around. Kylo Ren thought him brave. Kylo Ren listened with true interest when Dopheld talked about nebulas, as if he hadn’t heard any of it. Kylo Ren had Knights who wanted to learn tricks to remember how to spell difficult words. Kylo had only put one T in the word “letter” and got personal and personnel mixed up. Kylo hadn’t had any schooling since he was ten years old and thought Dopheld a genius as a result.
“I’m willing to try. Try. This doesn’t mean I’m pledging my life to you, but–”
“That’s fine, more than fine. You’ve made me so happy, Dopheld, even just trying.” A grin was splitting Kylo’s face, making him handsome and Dopheld found himself smiling back, of all things. “My Knights are going to want to meet you, but I’ll put them off long as I can. They can be a little overwhelming. I’m more than happy to just try.” And suddenly Kylo’s lips were pressed to Dopheld’s brow before embracing him tightly. “Thank you,” he murmured into Dopheld’s shoulder.
Dopheld, for his part, was incredibly cautious as he raised his arms to hug Kylo back, and was surprised to find that simple contact made Kylo nearly melt into him. He hoped he wouldn’t regret this, he really did.
---Epilogue---
If anyone had asked his expectations, it wouldn’t be this, reflected Dopheld as he sat showing Kylo the finer points of exactly how they navigated the Finalizer. The Knight had brought him to his room, and the size of the bed was at least double the size of Dopheld’s bunk and could you blame him for enjoying that?
Kylo was laying with his head in Dopheld’s lap, holding the datapad and looking like he was doing his best to glare it into making sense. Dopheld, who kept finding his fingers winding in Kylo’s surprisingly soft hair, looked down at how furious the Knight seemed and said, “I thought you were good pilot.”
“I am,” agreed Kylo. “But that doesn’t mean that I deal with this. The computer does that.” Suddenly he tilted his head back to look at him and said, “Not that I think you’re a computer.”
“I know what you mean, Kylo. You usually pilot a single ship, not a Star Destroyer.”
“Exactly. All this…”
“It certainly isn’t for everyone. And that’s why I have a job.” There was a small ping as a message was announced, coming from a scrambled source. “Your Knights keep sending me messages without spell corrector so I can see how they’re doing. They’re improving very fast.”
“I know.” There was such pride in Kylo’s voice, it made Dopheld smile.
“You really love them.”
“They’re all snarky piles of bantha shit.”
“You love them.”
“I do. But not like I love you.”
“I did figure that one out.” The message was from Mandryka, a simple enough message talking about how he had to pretend to be a First Order officer while undercover and asking why anyone would think him handsome when he was missing both his left eye and the bridge of his nose. That had been a near thing, that blaster bolt, Dopheld remembered Kylo had destroyed three consoles while waiting to hear if Mandryka would live, unable to be calmed even by Dopheld. But Kylo had kept his promise, and even when raging with helpless anger against everything and everyone else (poor Magellan, the man had to go to Medical for two days), he had never once hurt Dopheld.
There were only a few mistakes, but it was so much better than last time, and it made Kylo proud enough that he was in enough of a jovial mood to let Dopheld listen in as he spoke to Mandryka in their minds, or that strange meeting point in between. He didn’t understand the Force any more than Kylo understood navigation jargon.
They think you’re handsome because they think a wound like that means you’re brave.
I was brave with that, master.
No, just incredibly stupid.
I know that tone of voice. Are you with Dopheld now? Tell him I say hello and the next time he has shore leave we’re all going to meet up with him.
He’s listening in.
Hello Dopheld!
Mandryka had to stop talking soon, distracted by some Knightly business that Dopheld couldn’t know about. Vaguely, he wondered if knowing the edges to all these missions the Supreme Leader sent them on was dangerous. “Master Snoke knows about you,” said Kylo, looking up at him. “But I don’t think he understands just how important you are. He has no reason to hurt you, and I won’t give him one.”
Dopheld smiled faintly before calling up the book Kylo was reading to distract them both from that line of discussion, a book with simple enough words. It was an interesting thing, how Kylo couldn’t read or spell that well, but knew all the words and how to use them. He held his own in conversation but it was the written word where he fell short. At least reading aloud the book to him so he could follow along and hear the words seemed to be helping. And if the other Knights seemed a bit too knowledgeable about the plots, who was Dopheld to judge? He remembered very well running to his cousins as a child to share the exciting turn in the book.
“When we last left off Detective Nero was looking for clues in the garden when he heard Turm and Rang talking.”
“It sounded like they knew something,” agreed Kylo as if he was about to go interrogate the two footmen himself, settling in more fully to listen and read along. There was still an hour before Dopheld’s shift, that was plenty time to see if Detective Nero could get closer to finding out who had murdered (or, as Zdenka had spelled it last week when she put in her guess of who did it, “murdured”) Count Roche.
