[Fill] Kylo/Mitaka (PART 3/EPILOGUE)
(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 01:35 am (UTC)(link)That was quite a heavy sigh in the Force, Jankel, is everything alright?
Everything’s fine. I’m just despairing for the state of this galaxy. You’re the most powerful man in the Galaxy after Master Snoke, you’ve got ancestry people only dream of, and here we are hoping a Lieutenant will look at you.
Do you think he will?
He better. He’ll regret it for the rest of his life if he doesn’t.
I showed him a vision of the Apse Nebula, and he started talking about them, he learned about them in the Academy. Did you know the colors are from types of gases?
Really?
I didn’t know that. And there are so many different kinds and he just knows them! He didn’t have to read off notes or anything, he just knew it.
Master you’re in love.
Yes, we already established that. Oh, you’ll find this useful. Apparently “necessary” has one C and two S’s. It’s necessary to have one collar and two sleeves. Dopheld taught that to me. He didn’t even laugh that I can’t spell.
Oh that’s a brilliant trick. Do you think he has any more of those?
Probably.
Learn them. Then teach them to me. I had to actually write something last week. By hand. I haven’t had to do that since I was ten! They didn’t laugh when I misspelled “Professor,” only one F, by the way, but I could feel that they were amused that I couldn’t spell. Didn’t get an excuse to kill them though. Shame.
I’ll pass on whatever I learn, I promise.
The message stared Dopheld in the face, and he couldn’t manage to get his mind off it, even when he focused on his job above everything else. It sat in the back of his mind, insistent, and he didn’t know what to do with it. No one else knew about it, of course, but he had the horrible sensation that they would if he read it in public. So, he didn’t open it again until the others in his room were asleep, idly letting the light from the datapad sparkle on the ash-diamond as he read it again, wondering at each line.
Dearest Dopheld,
I turned off the spell correcter, so don’t laugh. I found it necessary to write to you. I remember that I said I wouldn’t bother you, but leters seem less personel than sharing dreams. I know you said you would think of my offer, and I don’t want to make you say anything before you really can think about it, so don’t think you have to write me back.
My bisness is done, and I am coming back. Lamoral, one of my Knights, he always wants to talk about you. The Knights of Ren talk with our minds, almost all the time. And when I talk to Lamoral, he always asks “How is Dopheld? When can we meet him?” I told Jankel about your trick for spelling necessary and he wants to know if you have any other tricks? I told my Knights not to come to your dreams, so if you tell me, I can pass it on. I want to know for me as well, thoh.
I miss you very much, and I am ecsited to see you again. I will see you soon.
Kylo
Folding his lips as he read and reread the message, Dopheld found himself pressing the reply button and began to write a response, despite himself.
Kylo,
I think it’s very brave that you would write to me without spell corrector. I promise, I’m the last person who would laugh at you. You are right, a letter is much less personal than sharing a dream, but I admit I was almost afraid the rest of the personnel onboard would find this, it’s easier to hack into a datapad than into someone’s mind.
I have been thinking of your offer, but I can’t tell you anything now. Maybe when you come back from your business, though. (There’s a trick for Jankel. Business is filled with busy-ness. I had to use that one a lot when I was young)
Things have been very different on the Finalizer without you, when you’re gone people notice.
Dopheld
He wrote me!
Who did?
Who do you think I’m talking about, Lamoral? Dopheld!
This is good! Really good!
He said he might have a response when I get back.
A single exclamation of joy burst across the Force, something that drew the other Knights in to ask what was going on, until it was a complete babble of voices, seven all trying to talk at once about Dopheld Mitaka’s letter. By circumstance it was hard to actually make themselves heard, but eventually Djura managed to make herself heard as she said, Master, I’m happy for you. I really am. I’m glad this is working out for you. But I said it before and I’ll say it again. Resolve this, because I am dead tired of dreaming about your man because you can’t keep it under control.
You know what, Djura, I think it’s sweet.
You know what, Welko, I don’t care.
It took two days after Ren got back to the Finalier before Dopheld saw him anywhere approaching privately. At least Ren had learned that privacy was important. He didn’t want this coming out anywhere where there could be those who could eavesdrop. There was an upside and a downside to the fact that due to sheer size they couldn’t actually have a security tape absolutely everywhere. The upside was it was actually relatively easy to get privacy due to large blind spots in the ship’s monitoring system. The downside was large blind spots in the ship’s monitoring system.
But today Dopheld was focused on the upside to that. Ren didn’t even seem to think about it, removing his helmet as soon as they were alone. There was such a look of hope on his face that Dopheld understood exactly why he always wore the mask.
“I missed you,” said Ren.
Dopheld took a breath and said, “You told me you loved me. And I said I had to think about it. Because you kind of said it out of nowhere. I was pretty sure it was just a prelude to you actually killing me.”
“Dopheld–”
“Please let me finish. I don’t think I can say this again if you stop me.” Ren closed his mouth then, and simply nodded, watching him with intense dark eyes. “You gave me your grandmother’s ash-diamond, and you snuck into my dream to show me the Apse Nebula in person. You’ve asked me to give you and your Knights tricks for knowing how to spell. Two weeks ago you were absolutely terrifying and I never wanted to spend more than one second in your company.”
“And now?”
Dopheld took another breath. Kylo Ren didn’t always stalk around. Kylo Ren thought him brave. Kylo Ren listened with true interest when Dopheld talked about nebulas, as if he hadn’t heard any of it. Kylo Ren had Knights who wanted to learn tricks to remember how to spell difficult words. Kylo had only put one T in the word “letter” and got personal and personnel mixed up. Kylo hadn’t had any schooling since he was ten years old and thought Dopheld a genius as a result.
“I’m willing to try. Try. This doesn’t mean I’m pledging my life to you, but–”
“That’s fine, more than fine. You’ve made me so happy, Dopheld, even just trying.” A grin was splitting Kylo’s face, making him handsome and Dopheld found himself smiling back, of all things. “My Knights are going to want to meet you, but I’ll put them off long as I can. They can be a little overwhelming. I’m more than happy to just try.” And suddenly Kylo’s lips were pressed to Dopheld’s brow before embracing him tightly. “Thank you,” he murmured into Dopheld’s shoulder.
Dopheld, for his part, was incredibly cautious as he raised his arms to hug Kylo back, and was surprised to find that simple contact made Kylo nearly melt into him. He hoped he wouldn’t regret this, he really did.
---Epilogue---
If anyone had asked his expectations, it wouldn’t be this, reflected Dopheld as he sat showing Kylo the finer points of exactly how they navigated the Finalizer. The Knight had brought him to his room, and the size of the bed was at least double the size of Dopheld’s bunk and could you blame him for enjoying that?
Kylo was laying with his head in Dopheld’s lap, holding the datapad and looking like he was doing his best to glare it into making sense. Dopheld, who kept finding his fingers winding in Kylo’s surprisingly soft hair, looked down at how furious the Knight seemed and said, “I thought you were good pilot.”
“I am,” agreed Kylo. “But that doesn’t mean that I deal with this. The computer does that.” Suddenly he tilted his head back to look at him and said, “Not that I think you’re a computer.”
“I know what you mean, Kylo. You usually pilot a single ship, not a Star Destroyer.”
“Exactly. All this…”
“It certainly isn’t for everyone. And that’s why I have a job.” There was a small ping as a message was announced, coming from a scrambled source. “Your Knights keep sending me messages without spell corrector so I can see how they’re doing. They’re improving very fast.”
“I know.” There was such pride in Kylo’s voice, it made Dopheld smile.
“You really love them.”
“They’re all snarky piles of bantha shit.”
“You love them.”
“I do. But not like I love you.”
“I did figure that one out.” The message was from Mandryka, a simple enough message talking about how he had to pretend to be a First Order officer while undercover and asking why anyone would think him handsome when he was missing both his left eye and the bridge of his nose. That had been a near thing, that blaster bolt, Dopheld remembered Kylo had destroyed three consoles while waiting to hear if Mandryka would live, unable to be calmed even by Dopheld. But Kylo had kept his promise, and even when raging with helpless anger against everything and everyone else (poor Magellan, the man had to go to Medical for two days), he had never once hurt Dopheld.
There were only a few mistakes, but it was so much better than last time, and it made Kylo proud enough that he was in enough of a jovial mood to let Dopheld listen in as he spoke to Mandryka in their minds, or that strange meeting point in between. He didn’t understand the Force any more than Kylo understood navigation jargon.
They think you’re handsome because they think a wound like that means you’re brave.
I was brave with that, master.
No, just incredibly stupid.
I know that tone of voice. Are you with Dopheld now? Tell him I say hello and the next time he has shore leave we’re all going to meet up with him.
He’s listening in.
Hello Dopheld!
Mandryka had to stop talking soon, distracted by some Knightly business that Dopheld couldn’t know about. Vaguely, he wondered if knowing the edges to all these missions the Supreme Leader sent them on was dangerous. “Master Snoke knows about you,” said Kylo, looking up at him. “But I don’t think he understands just how important you are. He has no reason to hurt you, and I won’t give him one.”
Dopheld smiled faintly before calling up the book Kylo was reading to distract them both from that line of discussion, a book with simple enough words. It was an interesting thing, how Kylo couldn’t read or spell that well, but knew all the words and how to use them. He held his own in conversation but it was the written word where he fell short. At least reading aloud the book to him so he could follow along and hear the words seemed to be helping. And if the other Knights seemed a bit too knowledgeable about the plots, who was Dopheld to judge? He remembered very well running to his cousins as a child to share the exciting turn in the book.
“When we last left off Detective Nero was looking for clues in the garden when he heard Turm and Rang talking.”
“It sounded like they knew something,” agreed Kylo as if he was about to go interrogate the two footmen himself, settling in more fully to listen and read along. There was still an hour before Dopheld’s shift, that was plenty time to see if Detective Nero could get closer to finding out who had murdered (or, as Zdenka had spelled it last week when she put in her guess of who did it, “murdured”) Count Roche.
