I don't want to rant about High School AUs or DaddyDomHux characterizations but it's really not my cup of tea and I wish I could read more fic where their personalities are close-ish to the canon. Does anyone have fic to rec? I don't mind AUs (for example I can see Hux being a vampire without being OOC) or redemption arcs, I just want more fic where they both act their age, are both pretty shitty people, and which are set in the SW universe.
Well, one of the best known, and pretty damn close to IC series of fics I know of is "Children, Wake Up," by hollycomb on Ao3. You may have already read it, it's so good, and it's a 288,509 word MONSTER that is still being added to on a regular basis! https://archiveofourown.org/series/386986
There is also "all that you love will be carried away" by byzantienne and coldhope. Another series I quite enjoy, and also active. It is again on Ao3, and it's popular so may not be new to anyone. http://archiveofourown.org/series/396736
"Wayward Son" by ProfDrLachfinger is an incomplete standalone fic so far, but it's a good one. It's worth a read, though it's not as close to canon as the others, I feel. http://archiveofourown.org/works/5834020
That's all I've got right now, but if I remember any others, I'll be back!
It's a weird case: In the context of the story, it might even seem IC (which is probably why so many people say it is) but if you look closer it's more like... how do I put it.
I got the feeling that the author kinda liked the general idea/concept of the characters, took them and turned them into OCs. And the reason why people think it's so great and IC is because it actually started out as kinda IC, but during the plot of the fic (which basically turned into kinda OTT whump followed by a strange cottage romance AU at the start of Ceasefire, the second story in the series), the characters warped into something that had, imo, very little to do anymore with their original characterisations.
And yeah, sure, you could argue that a certain kind of character development is normal- especially in such a long story- and even good writing. But in the case of this story it just rubbed me the wrong way (mind, I know the author from other fandoms and she keeps doing this "taking characters and turning them into her OCs" thing all the damn time).
I think it's the way that you get the feeling that the plot is only there as a tool to warp the characters. Like, it seems like the reason the author wrote what she did just because she had this OOC characterisation in mind that she wanted to impose on the characters and the plot is how she reached this goal. (I also think a lot of the writing is incredibly pretentious drivel but that's a matter of taste, I guess.)
Hmm ditto you on that. Liked the 1st part. Like the 1st part of the 2nd part, couldn't get any further.
I like the writing, but it was a very AU story.
I think one difficult aspect of writing for an unfinished tale, especially in film form, which is so short, is that while it is great to go AU and guestimate the characterizations for people who enjoy that, it is hard to expand on the characters and write a long story in an IC manner without veering off at some point.
I usually love giving fic recs but I've been kind of picky about which Kylux fics I save so I don't have that many recs. So, um… These might be rtyi? (I'm v sorry if they're disappointing)
Canon Kylux Recs?
