They wouldn't be repeating that often in the first 6 hours after posting though. No, it's crap. It's rushed and melodramatic and not my best work, even though my best is pretty mediocre. I'm disappointed with myself.
Don't focus on it too much. My fics have a whopping 10 kudos on average. If I started to care, I'd get myself in a pointless self-loathing feedback loop.
Besides, for a while (still? Not my pairing so IDC/IDK) the most popular Reylo fic was literally a Tumblr meme. So yeah, don't worry about it.
Yeah, you're right. It's just the first thing I've posted after a painful dry spell, so I'm hyperconcious. Also I haven't written much in this fandom yet and my characterizations and world details are not solid.
Most of my stuff tops out around 20-50 kudos as well, but it usually gets more per hit right at the start. I've been sick though and my ego defences are weak right now too so everything seems worse than it is.
I mainly write Finn/Hux and Finn/Kylo because I love the dynamic of unrequired ships and just love Finn getting attention, but I'm trying to get into others.
Maybe there could be a place, where people could submit their fics for concrit / comments / feedback? Sometimes it is nice to just get feedback of any kind, otherwise it can seem a bit like posting into a void.
And I know not everyone needs that, but it could be nice. I mean hell, I'll read your fic.
Sometimes though I do think the AO3 hits counter is flawed.
Maybe just have a post here? I think one of the older kink memes would have "critic" posts were people would link their own works for people to leave feedback on the writing.
It could be risky though, since people might see at as an opportunity to troll.
I don't post to Livejournal or ff.net under this identity, but I probably could have used a beta on this, or at least let it sit until my fever broke. :P
Anon, we have all felt that way at one point or another. Don't let it discourage you though. Attention doesn't always equal quality, otherwise Fifty Shades of Grey would be a work of art. I have seen stories on AO3 with hundreds of kudos and comments that are OOC messes and wonderful ones that barely get 10. Be proud of your writing. :)
Seriously, preach. When I want a new fic to read I always pick the ones with the most kudos and I am just sitting there sometimes like "wait, this has 200+ kudos?"
Lmao, exactly! It confuses me when people say they only search based on kudos/comments, because my experience with "big name authors and stories" has almost always resulted in that "why is this so popular" reaction. I sometimes joke that if you want to hit it big in fandom just write as many cliches and tropes and make the characters as OTT OOC as possible, but man sometimes that's lowkey true.
That seems pretty average. I have 22,683 hits but only 2,413 kudos all together on ao3, which is like 10% total. Some of my fics are definitely carrying more of their kudos weight than others. I feel like the percentage difference between hits and kudos is a really misleading way to look at your fics, because it's rarely ever going to be high percentage.
Instead I go in the tag of the pairing I'm writing for and look to see what similar fics written around the same time have in kudos. I don't do it often, but a few times that I've felt like my rare pair fics have bombed it's really helped.
Though, of course, some fics really do just bomb and that can suck.
I'm starting to learn that AO3 hit/kudos ratio is pretty meaningless. I've seen amazing stuff get hardly anything, and popular stuff get a ton. (Tumblr friends thinking they'll be unfollowed if some BNF realizes they haven't liked it? Who knows.) Don't stress over it. I'm sure it's great! I haven't seen many SW fics that I didn't think were good.
A kudos:hit ratio only tells you about the people that clicked on your story. It could just as easily be a function of your tags and/or summary. If that isn’t capturing the content of your story accurately (often difficult), people clicking on your fic, looking for specific things in your story, might not have found what they were looking for. A good kudos:hit ratio means that people who looked at your tags and summary got what they came for, and nothing more than that.
Also, pro-tip, a couple of AO3’s “canon” character-name tags don’t syn with other ones sometimes, so there’s that.
