I am kind off switching between can't wait for it to finally coming to theaters soon, and dreading the movie, because so many authors I like in SW TFA have been previously written for Avengers.
and I am feeling afraid and torn myself, I love being here, and don't want to be swayed away from TFA, but gosh, even only the trailers released about civil war are enough to make me temporarily forget about stormpilots and kylux...I know its silly, and there is space for all kinds of fandoms, its just...Avengers is huge. Its like the fandom thats going to eat all other fandoms??
How are you feeling? I mean, I felt no threat with Batman vs Superman, because..that movie was..mediocre? I liked the inclusion of Wonderwoman, but otherwise, the whole plot was illogical in huge parts, and coming out of theaters, I knew, well, that one isn't going at least, in terms of fanbase here. (though I saw a few fics appearing at ao3, but nothing that would indicate a huge fanbase, maybe it was more geared towards fanboys, then fangirls, but still).
Re: Is anyone else afraid of Cap America: civil war? will it slow down SW TFA?
I'm kind of curious from a sociology perspective to see a kind of 'migration' map of fandom. Who went to which fandom from what, who's active in multiple fandoms, which fandoms come back to life and why, etc.
Re: Is anyone else afraid of Cap America: civil war? will it slow down SW TFA?
Not sure about current fandoms, but a couple of years ago - maybe 8 or 9 years, I remember, somebody did actually made a very complex map drawing. Similar to what you were saying above, who went to which fandom and so on. Sadly, I neither saved the map, nor did I save the link, so I cannot point it out to you.
I only remember vaguely a meta post , where another fan tried explaining, how Smallville fanbase left for Supernatural and Merlin and SGA fandom. And what type of fan went for what show for what reasons. It did ring true to me, at leasts, thats what my memory tells me. Its surely a fascinating topic, and a huge undertaking, should someone try their hands on it.
Re: Is anyone else afraid of Cap America: civil war? will it slow down SW TFA?
I know people in universities are doing papers on various fandom subjects because I've had grad students doing their thesis asking to quote some of my fic (lol!) so maybe there's a thesis out there on it. If not yet, then there will be someday.
I kind of love how fandom has become this legitimized and acknowledged part of society now, but since I've been in fandom in one way and another since 1985, it kind of bemuses me too.
Re: Is anyone else afraid of Cap America: civil war? will it slow down SW TFA?
I feel different. About the part of fandom being "legitimized and acknowledged part of society". Its not that I doubt that, but I am afraid, the general society and mainstream people are not thinking of fandom that is being kept running by women. They still think of fandom as of fanboys, and conventions with weird teenagers or adults in costumes running around. Slash fandom? Will still let people put the label "freak" and whatever on a woman, no matter her age, if she engages in what we do here.
I am slightly younger than you probably, and I have been reading printed gen fanfics since 1992, or when I was thirteen. I spend my pocket money on getting fanzines and comics from US, before there was even the internet and email existed. I akcknowledge, that as a whole, we are slightly better off than 30 or 40 years ago, but nowhere are we being at a place, that would and could put us in the public eye, in comparison to fanboys, or what male fans can afford (male fantasies about two women in porny pieces? totally fine! female fantasies about two men having unrealistic sex? those women should be examined).
I don't want to sound bitter, but we still cannot carry out our hobbies the same as men can. And I talk about able bodies, cis white and cis WOC. how far would society tolerate (generic) you, if you were anything from trans, to lesbian, to asexual, to aromantic or whatever deviations from the norm there is?
Re: Is anyone else afraid of Cap America: civil war? will it slow down SW TFA?
I cannot provide you with those metas , that I was mentioned, but two were relatively easy to find, that were also ignited fierce discussions over half a decade ago:
The age for that kind of discussions has gone, much like the elves in LoTR have sailed to the West, but its still feels good to look back, even if I never participated on those, on the mere grounds, that well, linguistic reasons.
And if you really have time to dwell in the past: http://metafandom.livejournal.com/profile
Re: Is anyone else afraid of Cap America: civil war? will it slow down SW TFA?
Considering I swingers from the Marvel universe to here from lack of fics and interest (can only focus on one thing for so long), yeah civil war may swing me right back. But the new SW movie is coming out soon too, so.
I am more afraid of a movie so bad it kills my interest. Avengers 2 and Thor 2 I am looking at you.
Re: Is anyone else afraid of Cap America: civil war? will it slow down SW TFA?
Urghhh, don't remind me of Thor 2..okay, that is unfair, because I didn't even watch that movie, because I cringed at the trailers. I should not judge without even giving it a chance, but I can't just bring myself, not even, when its on TV.
Av2:AoU was better than BvS, but not as good as it could have been, so I am torn. Damn, being torn is practically a requirement for being in SW TFA :D
Re: Is anyone else afraid of Cap America: civil war? will it slow down SW TFA?
I don't see anything wrong with Thor 2, and I'm not a Hiddlestoner. It and Ultron are just middle-chapter movies setting up plot mcguffins for future movies. They aren't perfect, but they are no where near as purely WRONG as Batman v Superman.
Re: Is anyone else afraid of Cap America: civil war? will it slow down SW TFA?
The only thing Batman V Superman was a threat to was itself. What a pile of crap. Wonder Woman was the only good thing about it. Gal Gadot is fucking spectacular.
I'm looking forward to the crossovers from Civil War, particularly any where Finn and Sam Wilson hang out, or the Civil War plot turns into Tony cooperating with the First Order and Steve joining the Resistance and Bucky being Steve's childhood friend who was pulled into the stormtrooper program, etc.
Re: Is anyone else afraid of Cap America: civil war? will it slow down SW TFA?
I like how your brain works!! It didn't even occur me, that there would be opportunities for spectacular crossovers!! *brain went offline for a couple of minutes...out of sheer excitement..Tony and Hux...Finn and Sam...Phasma and Natasha...*
You are way more forthcoming than I am, I didn't wanted to say so bluntly, BvS was crap because, well there might be DC fans here..and I saw manifests saying that the movie was good. I am not convinced nor swayed, but still, don't want to rain on others parade. At least the movie gave us Wonder Woman, now I am really looking forward to her coming to theaters next year!
Re: Is anyone else afraid of Cap America: civil war? will it slow down SW TFA?
(I think you meant OP not SA? SA the way you used it would mean you wrote the comment you replied to, and that was me. ;D)
Phasma and Natasha together in any context is mind blowing. I might have to sail on that ship.
*Extended rant about Batman V Superman below, contains some spoilers.*
If there were DC fans around, they would be the ones complaining the worst about BvS. Just about everyone I've seen or read who's read the comics or seen previous series or is more than passing familiar with the concepts of Superman and Batman roundly hate it. The local comic store was practically rebel headquarters against the movie.
The only person I've seen admit in public they liked it was some guy who basically only knew they were superheroes and went to see the movie for the explosions. Unfortunately he admitted he liked it in a crowd of comic book fans and got several earfuls of ranting about it.
I'm not a comic book fan and have been pretty meh about the DC universe as a whole, but that movie was a badly written, badly conceived, muddily shot, crapfest of the highest order that makes Batman and Superman look like morons and violent sociopaths. The actors did well with what they were given, but what they were given was garbage. If it wasn't for Wonder Woman showing up at the end and cutting through all the bullshit by just showing up and getting the job done, the movie would have been a complete waste.
If I'd known she was only going to be in little bits during the movie and then mostly in the end scene, I'd have gone in, come straight back out, popped my head in a few times, and then gone and watched the final battle and left before the eye-rolling multiple end scenes that amount to wasted film stock because everyone knows what's going to happen, they just draw it out an extra ten minutes of sheer purple prose filming.
*Rant with some spoilers ends*
TLDR: A pro reviewer somewhere online called it 2 hours of a troubled little boy smashing his action figures together, and I'm inclined to agree with that assessment.
Re: Is anyone else afraid of Cap America: civil war? will it slow down SW TFA?
Can't hear the workings of a bomb he's standing next to, can't smell the explosive material, can't smell the piss in the jar in front of the congresswoman. I mean shit, that whole front table should have been able to smell that.
On a related note, do not even get me started on Lex Luthor.
