Soooo I've been actually writing fics for the first time and posting to AO3, and... is there some secret queue algorithm to how they're displayed? I swear to god I see the same posts on the top of the page for over a full day, while newer and updated posts are scrolled down the page as normal.
Sorry if this is not the right place for this but it's aggravating if people are deliberately making small updates to their fic to keep it on top. IDK!
There's a button at the bottom of the filter pane marked "complete only" or something like that. Click it each time you do a search and it eliminates and results that are wips.
Hinh. Never heard of that. I know that for the first few days after you post, if you edit the fic at all, it will get bumped back to the top of the queue as if you reposted it. But after a while, it doesn't repost the fic if you are merely editing.
Nah. If that happened my fics would always be at the top because I edit them practically every few minutes the first few days. Usually when it posts it's already a page behind and then disappears into the abyss.
It's fucking annoying. I have actually stopped reading the stories of several authors even though they would have interested me in theory because I find this shit so pushy and desperate.
It's not always done on purpose. There is an AO3 issue where, due to timezone differences, you can post a fic and have it appear below an earlier fic. But if you post something that ends up at the top and then five minutes later, Massive Unfinished WIP is back in first place? Or if it's there all day every day? They're changing the post date, and those fuckers are the worst.
My proposed wanky response: every time they hangs the date to bump their fic to the top, leave them another copy of the exact same uniquely worded comment. Or, if you're feeling creative, act like you're stuck in a Groundhog Day scenario in the comments section of their fic.
Huh, interesting issue. I personally filter by "date posted" in my favourite tags and only track WIPs individually. That tends to prevent this problem. I think it might even prevent publication date shenanigans from interfering with what I see, but that's an anecdotal opinion based on what I've noticed, and not actual data.
Ugh. This is why I always search by pairings, then by date. Then depending on my mood, "complete only".
Sorry you're dealing with this. I have only noticed this a few times but I always thought it was because some days/times are slower so certain fics stay at the top.
