It was fairly recently, like in the last couple of years. I've been getting more comfortable referring to myself as just "autistic" lately, but I still use it when I talk about my diagnosis because a) it's on the paperwork, so it's a good habit to get into when talking to social workers so they don't reject my application for falsification and b) I end up talking to a lot of parents who have just had their young kids diagnosed and it seems to be helpful in getting across what I want to say to them, which is "Yeah, little Billy's gonna be okay."
