are you assuming, everyone else in anyplace of the world has some sort of racial awareness or training, or some taught ability to decode every racial differences between what is white caucasian, asian, black, arabian, or latin american? is that a higher awareness, when you are raised or live in USA?
so, as a non-US person: for me, Poe was just another white guy on screen from an hollywood movie. Until I came here, and saw, he was categorized as Latin American? some sort of stereotyped Latino?
I am fairly sure, I can differ between some kind of asians (due to my own heritage), like that one actor is fairly sure a Chinese heritage, that other one is Indian heritage, and the third one may be is Korean, or Japanese, but even differ between Malaysian, Philippine, Cambodian, Vietnamese and Indonsian would totally be beyond what i am able. not to mentioned, arabian countries, is that person from iraq, iran, libya, turkey, saudi, kuwait, oman, bahrain, or emirates? My grandmother always said , "jeeeeeeeeeeeeez, all those white europeans look the same (she meant the french, spanish, italian, german and british ones) how i am suppose to know who is from which country?"
I know, its different to differ between people from countries of a certain region, and to differ from their overall region, where they are from, but still the ferocity in which it is discussed here, is still surprising me. is the everyday life in USA really that difficult and hard (or maybe a better word is full of awareness) in terms of race? like if you are white, you have to defend yourself everday, and if you are non-white, you have to explain yourself all the time?

As a white European, when I first found out about the separate Latino ethnic designation, I found it hard to get my head around it. In Europe, Latino people would either be classified by nationality, or as one of white/black/Indigenous American/mixed when discussing them in a racial context, based on their ancestry. I don't think the concept of being Latino as something separate from your nationality is well understood here. So no, it isn't just you. As I'm sure you're aware, race is a social construct, and it is interpreted differently all around the world, so ways of conceptualizing race from other countries are bound to seem strange if you haven't grown up with them! That's what I tell myself, anyway...
About the differences between Europeans: although we like to pretend that you can easily tell a white European's nationality from their looks, in reality, white Europeans are pretty homogenous. Once you take away markers like clothes, hairstyles, tans and body language, it is a lot harder to tell apart say a French person and a German than people like to believe. You can't really go by stereotypical colouring, either, because there are redheaded Spanish people, naturally blond Italians and dark Brits and Scandinavians. Basically, we Europeans would struggle to correctly guess a European nationality in many contexts, so we don't expect that you would be able to either!

The European equivalent to Latino is Arab. It's a category of people based loosely off geography and language with a diverse range of people.
People who dismiss Poe as white also tend to be people who aren't particularly globally aware. The idea that Americans (people from the US) clarify that Poe is Latino because they are super concerned about race is petty dismissive of over a continents worth of people. Obviously you are going to be more familiar with the countries near your own, but still.

I had never heard Arab used as a parallel concept, but that makes perfect sense, thanks for that. I think I get the concept of Latino a bit better now I have something to relate it to from my own part of the world.
Not sure if you were talking to me or to the anon I was replying to, but I don't think Americans are more obsessed with race, and I didn't say that. If anything, Europeans are because we would talk about Oscar Isaac's race based on his ancestry, even when it has little to do with how he is conceptualized in his own culture. I am ESL so maybe that doesn't come across well in my writing, sorry.

I'm the person who initially complained upthread about this kind of attitude in fandom. I hadn't seen that Tumblr post before, so thanks for linking it. It's refreshing to know there are a fair amount of people out there who agree that these people are being completely unreasonable and in many cases, bullying.

I tend to assume most people are pretty good about not ship-bashing, scrolling on by, and generally having a "live and live" ethos, especially on kinkmemes. There are always going to be a vocal set of people that haven't gone with these concepts, but I don't think they're that prolific, just loud.
You also get the "isn't it interesting the way ships work and what gets popular, maybe there's some weird societal thing going on, huh"-types around who aren't actively bashing or wanking (generally), but are just looking at fandom trends and wondering. They get lumped in with the angry-haters too.

Because I couldn't even finish reading the childish rant and the comic looked like it was done in paint. Really, what was the point?
