BB-8 like most droid in Star Wars Universe os self-aware and is reffered to with gendered language by the beings nearby (as he by convenience and tradition, or as it by douchebags who think being made of metal disqualifies droids from being thinking entities). What the BB-8 would prefer is not something anyone has likely asked.
Are Star Wars droids self aware/conscious/thinking/people? Great question! Canon is annoyingly vague and inconsistent. People in-verse generally don't treat them as people. Even Jedi have no compunctions about destroying them by the thousands. Is this a rights violation of non-organic people, or just hardware damage?
Well, there is also that weird scene in the prequels where droids are being "tortured" in the bad guy's... workshop. Why torture droids if they're not actually people? Why bother? If they are people then why does no one care?
Now if science fiction media X tells me droids/robots/ships/drones/AIs are people, sure, I suspend my disbelief, accept that their tech/biotech/wet-engineering managed to get that far and treat them like people. But Star Wars doesn't seem to want to come down one side or the other.
This is frustrating because I need to know if I should blame Anakin or C3PO itself for its hideous crime of being really, really annoying.
