I can see a lot of ways. Maybe they hooked up when Finn was still proud to be a Stormtrooper, and maybe there's still something there. Maybe Kylo Ren was such a new addition to the FO that Finn thinks of him differently, or maybe his reputation among the Troopers isn't very fearsome (or is an object of fascination). Maybe Kylo turns to the light side later and he and Finn become unlikely friends.
Maybe Finn gets captured, they try to recondition him, and it all backfires horribly when he talks Kylo into rebelling against the Dark Side and the First Order and returning to the Light.
Never said shipping them with those preferences was easy or even logical. And I'm absolutely okay with AUs or OOC, unless it robs the fic of any conflict it might have dealt with otherwise. Their backstory is what makes them interesting enemies, allies, friends or lovers, after all.
Finn being back in the First Order post-canon is really not my jam. It should mainly be on Kylo to get over his shit and prove himself as a person first. Afterwards, he can work on making Finn happy. And if that fails, I'll gladly take a one-sided Kylo crush while Finn finds his destiny with Rey, Poe or both at his side.
DA - You just mentioned why I like the pairing, I love ships that have that type of conflict and that a happy ending is not always guaranteed.
Plus, because of Finn's past and how little we know we cn imagine there was already some history between them before Finn left the Order and people have a lot of freedom working out the dynamic into a "what if" AU.
