From personal experience, most big name authors I have come across tend to usually also be the ones who struggle the most with keeping the characters in character and heavily depend on using outdated cliches (one of the most well known Destiel fanfictions is an OOC mess that people have actually asked the author to publish and have printed out themselves). I tend to usually avoid their recs for that reason.
Maybe because at some point they get so big they no longer care about growing their writing since they will get praise either way Or they were always bad and people just ignore it for the sake of the familiar tropes.
Honestly, I think it's because they tend to write popular tropes or kinks and a lot of people in fandom will read anything with a popular trope and popular pairing regardless of characterization.
PA-I think so too. Sort of how every police procedure is basically a cardboard copy of each other with new actors and are still mad popular because they feel "safe" and familiar.
But then so many of these tropes are also so gross and annoying (the whole uke/seme characterization can more often than not be found in these big name stories).
A lot of Steve/Bucky fic period is like that, sigh. It put me off the pairing even though I like it in theory. The fandom is just so over-the-top predictable about them though. It sent me to greener rarepair pastures.
TWS gave fandom some great fics, but my favorite fics are from right after Cap 1 came out. The Cap portion of fandom was small and most of the fics were very high quality. People familiar with the comics wrote some Winter Soldier!Bucky before it was confirmed that TWS would be the sequel, and almost everything I read was excellent.
After TWS, the pairing exploded and so many of the fics were a carbon copy of each other. It also started this trend of treating Bucky like he was helpless and needed Steve to rescue him despite the fact that Bucky is a highly trained soldier and doesn't need Steve to teach him how to eat or shower???
(Though, the trend I hated even more were all the fics that had Steve going to Tony for help with Bucky and Tony being so ~selfless and ~helpful because lmao no)
I've also found that big name authors tend to write all their pairings the same way. I know a lot of people gravitate towards the same types of ships (enemies, friends to lovers, etc.), but that doesn't mean the characters all have the same personality, and yet I find that if a popular author has five different fandoms, all the fics will end up having similar plots and characterization. Reading one pairing is basically like reading them all. There's no variation.
