I'm gonna say ... tumblr.

Tumblr can be blamed for a lot of things, but self insert stories are older than the internet.

Most trends in fandom pre-date tumblr. Tumblr is just full of newer fans who think they're creating something new.

Not everything can be blamed on tumblr.

True, not even pushing their private shitty sex fantasies on a section of their peers and calling it art is something Tumblr started, they're just extra entitled about it.

you call it entitlement, they might think of it as empowerement.

Well of course they would.

There were fandom archives long before Tumblr, where those stories were shared. Again, Tumblr has nothing to do with this.

In fact there are professional authors who have published self insert stories, long before Tumblr.

People just like to pin blame on tumblr for anything.

It's just so blameable.

i think so not. now that i have seen several answers, i think, i remember how that concept of "self insert/Reader" was called in earlier online fandom age.
it was partially "original female character" OFC?
like a little bit of mary sue?

i had those myself a lot in my teenage years (not and never published anything, just you know, in your own brain those imaginery stories your "wrote" for yourself?)

Not every OFC/OC/OMC is a self insert, even if they do get paired with a main character.

I guess I am ok with OCs or OMC/OFC where a character is created, given a name, put into the plot, whatever. I like those if they are well-written; I don't mind em, anyway. Live and let live.

I can't, however, get in to the ones where it's "Oh yes, my beautiful Y/N I will make sweet sweet love to you." Am I supposed to download it and find+replace for my name there? What is even? Has anyone else seen these?

I don't care if other people like it It's just not my thing. Haven't seen it much before this fandom, though. Well, this and MCU, I guess.
