I can understand giving characters cats as pets, but sometimes it's very obvious when someone is a dog person so a cat seems out of place. I was once in a fandom where the character had a dog in canon and some people changed it to a cat in their fic because of their own personal preference. That was weird.

Out of curiosity, what fandom was this?

I've seen this happen in a few fandoms and each time it made no sense because the dogs were an important part of the storyline.

One was Dragon Age, which was bizarre because dogs are really important to the kingdom. The other was an AU fic of Fraction's Hawkeye series where Lucky was a cat instead of a dog. Poor Pizza Dog.

Game of Thrones.

Some modern AUs gave Robb and Sansa cats. I can see why people might think Sansa likes cats, but she obviously liked dogs too. They had dogs in canon and the house crest was a dog, not a cat. Like you said, the dogs were important to the storyline so replacing them with cats was weird.

This is totally off topic, but Dragon Age is the most frustrating fandom to read fic for since you can have so many different canon pairings or origin stories that it's more like reading original fic. I think there's been maybe a dozen fics I've enjoyed.
