That's because he's awkwardly being put back in the story at the beginning of the third act. Oscar Isaac is a national treasure but even he couldn't make Abrams & Kasdan rewrite the whole movie for his beautiful eyes and his mad acting skills.
Before the Awakening seems to indicate that his major flaw is that he gives no fuck about orders or regulations if it doesn't come straight from Leia. And even in the movie, when Leia tells him to shoot the Starkiller base he's like "lol no gotta make sure my husband and his bff get out of there first"
That's the external real world reason, but the in movie reason was too simple and easy. Seems like something's going on. Whether they do anything with it r not.
