Honestly? As someone who is Jewish and lost a ton of family during the war, I'm actually more offended by the meteoric rise of Hux in the fandom as the big standout slash co-star-- this character who is both a blatant Nazi analogue and, coincidentally, the only other white guy available in the secondary cast-- than I am by a lone Nazi fetishist who is actually going to be open and honest about the fetish play they're engaging in.
I mean, come on fandom, let's not kid ourselves-- Kylux is ALL, BY DEFINITION, YES, ALL OF IT, lowkey Nazi kink. I'm getting the feeling that some of the enthusiasm in scapegoating this one author and driving them off ao3 for saying so out loud and crossing a very thin line into repellent historical fiction is basically just people being uneasy about how thin that line is in the first place.
It's the second most popular pairing for TFA. Poe/Finn is at about 1600 fics on AO3, and Kylo/Hux is almost at 900. I'd say that makes it pretty popular, especially since Kylo/Rey is almost 700 and Finn/Rey is at 300, half of which can be ignored because they're not actually Finn/Rey fics but Poe/Finn/Rey.
Rey as a character feels so unshippable though. She'd be my absolute favourite ever if I was still 9 years old, but I get no sense of active sexuality from her.
A few major Finn/Poe tumblrs have switched to Kylux and it annoys the fuck out of me. If your tumblr's name is something like finnpoe5evah, either start a seperate blog for Kylux or change the tumblr name to reflect the content.
I don't know if I'd call it a low-key Nazi kink since that implies anyone who ships it has a low-key Nazi kink and I don't think that's the case. I think a lot of people ship Hux with Kylo for the hate sex, because fandom loves its white slash pairings, and because some people see it as a darker/less fluffy alternative to Poe/Finn.
Yes, he was an unsubtle Nazi reference and the line is thin, but as someone who is also Jewish and had family who suffered and died during WWII, I don't think it's fair to go making implications about people having a Nazi kink unless they're actually making referencing to Nazism and anti-semitism.
Saying everyone who's into Kylux has a Nazi kink is... pretty gross of you, anon.
Pretty sure the reason so many people like the pairing is because of some combination of: a) hatesex b) they obviously drive each other nuts, but are also stuck relying on each other - so, fun dynamics c) it's refreshing to have a pairing where you can write those stories just totally fucking one or both of them over, and you don't feel the slightest bit bad about it, because they're both horrible people d) a lot of anons here also seem to have a particular interest in daddy-issue tropes, and this pairing has that in spades
Oh, forgot one: e) since they're both fucked-up characters, it feels kind of... safe? to project our own kinks that we ourselves are ashamed of onto them; like, hey, I'm not ruining a perfectly nice ship with my fucked-up kink, it's Kylux
The Empire and now the First Order have always been Nazi analogues, yes. But that doesn't mean people who are in any way interested in those characters automatically have a Nazi kink. Honestly, that's kind of a fucked up accusation. I mean, you wouldn't say that Lucas and JJ and all the various Star Wars script writers are Nazi sympathizers because they created those characters. You wouldn't hiss "Nazi lover" at children buying Darth Vader toys. But both of those examples would make a similar level of sense to your accusation.
I don't ship Kylux because I prefer my OTPs fluffy and fun. I'm guessing you don't ship it either. But telling people who are into it that they're practicing Nazi kink is reaching. I absolutely understand why, with your history, characters who are on the side of the Empire or the First Order would be repellent to you. That's totally understandable. But there is a difference between "these characters make me uncomfortable because of their visual and thematic ties to Nazis" and "if you like these characters then you are obviously turned-on by Nazis".
Actually, there was this fascinating minor phenomenon of Nazi erotic literature being sold in Israel in the 50s and 60s. They were generally about gentile soldiers being interrogated and tortured by female SS officers and then eventually getting their revenge (often via rape and murder.)
They were super taboo, because obviously, and were illegal.
Obviously there's a world of difference between people taking their own trauma and processing it through a safer filter like a dirty novel and people taking remote, "distant" trauma that isn't their own to write for funsies. This is not a defense of Nazi porn, just an interesting historical footnote.
