Oh, child. The first movie I remember seeing in a theater was Star Wars. I remember reading the novelization of Return of the Jedi before the movie came out and gasping that Luke and Leia were sisters.

Me too! Somewhere I think I still have an embarrassing semi-official release comic novelisation from after New Hope that had Luke/Leia becoming canon.
