I'm honestly baffled as to why fandom is now on tumblr. Sure, it's better for graphics, but it's awful for fic or conversations.

The fact that someone can reblog a personal post you make is such a turn-off for me. LJ had its problems, but I did love the privacy settings there and the commenting system.

I think it's an instant gratification thing. Post something at the right time in the right tags and you can get a huge audience agreeing with you. A lot of the time on Tumblr, it feels like the ultimate badge of honour is having a text post popular enough that you can complain about the trials of having a popular text post.

I like certain aspects of Tumblr, but others are terrible. The whole concept of scrolling has created this weird system where people don't want to read more than a few sentences or watch a video that's more than 6 seconds long - it interrupts the flow of endlessly scrolling through their dash.

There's also the fact that people will spend hours reading a multichaptered fic and won't leave a comment on that fic. But they will make a post about how they spent a whole evening reading multichaptered fic in the hopes strangers will reblog that post to get them more attention. And often that post then ends up with more reblogs than that multichaptered fic has comments.

In some ways Tumblr has been good for fandom. In other ways it's been awful.
