See, this is a case of fans reading waaaaay too much into a joke. Not only was he joking, but it was about Poe and BB-8, not Finn. All the gifs on tumblr took his comment way out of context.

So true. I followed the Stormpilot tag for the first week after TFA released, before it became too busy and I gave up. In that week, it went from somebody posting a gifset of that interview and making a comment (that may have been the OP joking) that he could be talking about Stormpilot, to nonstop posts holding that interview up as gospel proof that Isaac played Finn/Poe as romance and that Stormpilot is canon, damnit!!1! It was like a game of Whispers or Telephone. People were posting caps of the interview and referring to it constantly, but if you watch it, it's very clear he's only joking about, saying it could be a droid. And when anybody made a post reminding people of that fact, that post went ignored. Inside of a week, the interview became Stormpilot legend, when all it would take was a matter of minutes to actually watch it and see it's not definitively about Stormpilot at all. It was really strange to witness something like that happen so quickly - I love TFA fandom but we have no chill at all.

Thanks, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this weird trend happening. Every time somebody would refer to the ~mythical interview~ I felt like I was taking crazy pills, because it was so clear they hadn't actually watched it. I love Stormpilot, but the interview isn't proof of it being canon the way so many people claim.

It's like ripples in a pond - one person claims the interview is proof Stormpilot is canon, and then several other people see their post and start saying the same, and then each of them reaches several other people, and so on, and none of them are actually watching the damn interview!

It seems to be really important to fans these days that their ship becomes canon. I don't know why, maybe because of things like Twitter meaning they can communicate with showrunners directly, plus so many shows like to include shoutouts to their fandoms (which backfires more often than not). Lots of fans get so personally and overly invested in the idea of their ship being canon that even suggesting to them that it might not be hits them like a personal insult. Which has got to suck, because not every ship can be canon, so someone is always going to end up hurt.

It doesn't need to be canon at all. They just need to leave the possibility that Poe is gay open and unremarkable.

Oh yeah, I totally agree. They don't need him wearing a rainbow flight suit or anything, they just don't need to actively announce he's straight. And even if he ends up with a female love interest, I'm still gonna headcanon him as bi.

I mean, I'd love for him to be canon queer and have it clearly and undeniably voiced in canon. But I'm not getting my hopes up. And I think that people that do get their hopes up are, unfortunately, going to be disappointed.

Exactly. I saw the gifsets first, but was disappointed when I watched the interview and saw it wasn't about Poe/Finn romance at all. Not to mention a week or so after, John Boyega said in an interview that there was no potential Poe/Finn romance, so there you go.

I love TFA fandom, but stuff like this makes me stay on the outskirts because when people read into every offhand comment, things become intense very quickly.

Not really new, no. It's just the turnaround for this one was so unbelievably fast. Like, I've seen all this stuff happen before in other fandoms. But this shit went through the cycle of 'this could be canon' to 'this is canon' to 'if you don't think this is canon then you're [insert gross insults here] because there's ~proof~' in a matter of days. Days. And I'm in Europe, so I got it a day earlier. I don't think it took the predominantly US Tumblr users in the tags a full 24 hours to speed through those stages of wank. It's not even just one or two people, but a constant repetitive stream of the same posts over and over. It didn't even take a full week before I felt like I'd been seeing those posts for months on end. So yeah, I'd still say the fandom has no chill - it's been a very fast and very intense love affair, and the wank and anger and ship wars went from 0 to 60 overnight.

I still love the fandom, though.
