Use this post for things that are neither prompts nor questions for the mod.

I don't think it should be by days of the week. Not everyone has Sat and Sun as weekend days (my "weekend" days are Tues and Weds, for example) and beyond that, I think timezones would cause a problem.

I agree. Time zones and work schedules could really complicate a M-F, S, S schedule.

I agree, I think factoring in timezones could make this needlessly complicated. I would prefer one week on, one week off.

Hmm. That might work. Certainly the freeze has to be long enough that people are encouraged to write (and have enough spare time to do it) and not to simply hoard up prompts until the freeze ends. But is a week enough time for business as usual? Or should that be longer so people feel they have amassed a lot of prompts to consider, and don't feel cheated of prompting time. I don't know what the balance should be exactly...

if the freeze is up for too long, people lose interest

In other kinkmemes, I have found that fewer people lose interest if, during the freeze, the mod manages to engage memers in things like fic fests, discussion posts and rec threads and the like. You know, stuff like "which prompts do you most want to see filled?" But it has to be a big-ish hyped up thing that they remind people is ongoing, otherwise people still drift away.

These all sound like good suggestions for things to try. I'm glad we're having this conversation.

I've been on memes where writers offer to fill the first prompt(s) an anon links to (excluding any kinks/pairings the author won't write) and those always go over well. Of course, writers have to be willing to do it and anons have to expect that not every fill would be the same in length or quality, etc., but it keeps people interested.

Yes, there has to be a balance. If the prompts freezes are more frequent, perhaps they should be shorter. But if you make them too short, people will ignore them or find them an irritation, not an opportunity. I think week long freezes are good, but I'm not sure how much time there should be between them. A week may be too little time to balance out a week of freeze. Another anon suggested a five day business as usual, followed by a two day freeze. I think that would be so little of a freeze and so much switching back and forth that no one would pay attention to the freezes. It would make more work for the mods too, I suspect.

I'm not the anon you replied to, just playing devil's advocate: does it really matter what the days are? The pattern is just five days on, two days off. You can write and read fills anytime during the five days on, not just on the two days off.

No, it probably doesn't. I do think timezones would make it more of a hassle though.
