Seconding the anon who said that a lot of people don't read WIPs at all. Also, most people don't notice new fills immediately, and even fewer check for updates to WIPs. I'm not sure what the etiquette is for linking updates to WIPs on the full list, but IMO the wisest options are finishing before you post or posting on AO3.
IDK about AO3. Sure, it'll get more hits than the kink meme, but the fandom is exploding with fic so it's just as likely to get lost amongst other fics. There are a lot of great fics I've seen get lost in the shuffle on AO3.
But my personal opinion is that AO3 is turning into the new ff.net, so I could be biased.
I was thinking AO3 because it allows readers to subscribe, since one of the main issues with WIPs on anon memes is that people forget to check back for updates. But you make a good point about fic getting lost in the shuffle.
TFA already has about 3,400 fics and it's only been a month since the movie was released. There's definitely fic getting passed over since so much is posted each day.
It's a place to post fic where everyone knows to look for fic, and it has a far better search and categorization system than ff.net ever had, so not seeing your problem there, sorry.
Not everyone knows to look for fic on AO3. A lot of people on tumblr only look for fic on tumblr and lot of people new to fandom look for fic on ff.net. FF.net is still the most popular result when you search for fanfic online. AO3 is more fandom veteran knowledge.
People who only post on Tumblr have their own little world though. Most fanfic I've seen posted there has an AO3 link, and there are feeds from ao3 for every fandom that show up in [fandom] fanfic every time a new story for that fandom is posted. It's still the biggest and most known platform for hosting fic that doesn't have granny-rules about content and occasionally infect you with trojan horses like ff.net does.
I meant in terms of becoming a cesspool of badfic and self-inserts. Because in the past few years the badfic has outweighed the good. So, yeah, it's like ff.net for the new generation in that sense.
Fine by me. All I'm saying is if the OP wants attention they should post where there is attention to be had, like AO3 and ff.net. Being a hipster about what l=places your fic is posted isn't going to get it read.
