Rogue One is what's putting me off the Star Wars fandom. It's marketting ar another Hunger Games/Divergent rebel girl thing and I kind of hate that they're taking it on to Star Wars's coattails.
I'm not making any judgements. I wasn't that into TFA based in the trailer and here I am. It also looks like it will have a strong supporting cast of great actors so whenever the lead is good or bad doesn't make a lot of a difference.
It's more the pandering to a perceived demographic that annoys me. It looks like they took a standardized plot and character and slapped Star Wars stickers all over it. I'll go see it, but it's going to have an uphill struggle to make me see past that.
I just feel that everything they did right with Rey, they were set to do wrong with that new female main character. I'm so over the "bitchy edgy rebel gurrrl" trope because it feels like this is the only characterisation they think a cardboard cut-out ~strong female character~ can have. It's equally overdone as the mid-thirties stubbly/grungy white guy main character.
