Shows, books and movies have done this before and it screams of "look how progressive we are having a supposedly queer character but never mentioning that in canon!"
Showing an openly gay character doesn't have to mean a big, dramatic reveal scene. It's not that difficult to throw in a line or small offhanded scene indicating they're gay.
