You know what else smacks of elitism? You coming in and acting like your opinion is more enlightened and more factual just because you're defending someone who used tater tots.
I don't think it's so much using Earth-terms as brand names. Wine is a generic term across most cultures and while the actual word may vary depending on language, the understanding behind it is the same. Bread is a generic term. Fruit is a generic term.
It's the difference between writing "a fizzy drink" or writing "Coke" or "Pepsi". Or writing "bread" versus "X Brand Bread". I think the issue with tater tots is that it's technically a brand name and a specific cultural thing, and even though "tater" itself is pretty generic slang for potatoes in a lot of places, "tater tots" are a very specific type of food.
That's not to say they couldn't exist in the SW universe - because I imagine they would have some type of fried potato food - and there's nothing explicitly wrong with people enjoying a mention of them in the story or finding them out of place, but I think you're going to make mountains of molehills if you apply this reasoning to all Earth-terms versus brand names or specific cultural dishes.

-Finn gets captured, reconditioned and put back in the Stormtrooper ranks as a faceless non-entity, right up until Phasma or whoever captured Rey and Poe and gets Finn to take his Mask off when she orders him to kill them. Maybe a cliffhanger there or instead a cliffhanger when Finn is captured, reconditioned (I'm seeing something like the Winter Soldier rig for that) and put back in the ranks as a faceless Trooper. The taking off his mask and ordered to kill Rey and Poe can happen in 9. Right before it's revealed that Finn's liberated ALL the Stormtroopers, and they're on the Resistance side now.
-Luke's going to refuse the lightsabre, Rey's going to get half-trained, but really she's doing fine without training so it won't matter much.
-Luke will reveal she's his daughter, and the only survivor of the Jedi School massacre, and part of the reason he hid away was so that he wouldn't know where she was, and because he felt guilty as fuck for saving his own kid when he couldn't save any of the rest of them, including Kylo/Ben
-WEIRD-ASS FORCE SHIT from the First Temple, because you do not just throw down a plot-seed like that and not make it grow.
-Something that both explains Anakin's birth and retcons the fuck out of midichlorians, or even just "For a while the Jedi thought it was midichlorians, what dumbasses, LOL"
-Luke is going to die. Leia is going to die. Chewie is going to SHOOT THE SHIT OUT OF EVERYTHING.
-Finn/Rey is more strongly leant towards in a clumsy "neither of us have a sane social upbringing" way, but Finn/Poe not ruled out.
-At the end of 8 or 9, Poe Dameron will sacrifice his life for Finn and/or Rey and/or the Resistance.
-Kylo Ren will turn to the Light, and will bring down the First Order and Snoke or will be instrumental in that happening, but will do it without gaining the trust or faith of any of the Resistance, except posthumously

I think it just sounds weird in fan fic or "actual" fiction when things are referred to by their brand names. The Rizzoli & Isles series (the mystery novels not the show) name drop shit every other sentence practically and it drives me nuts.

Ship names have existed long before tumblr became the cool place to hang out.
If Finn was another white dude, I'd be okay with that. But I'd worry that any nod to that in a film would end up with Finn being relegated to a supporting character only there to support the story of a white character.
