I tend to stay away from secondary pairings when filling prompts because if the prompter didn't specify another pairing, I figure they don't want to read about it.

As far as AO3, a lot of people tag every single thing in order to get more hits, kudos, or attention. I only tag for secondary pairings if they're actually part of the fic. As someone who has shipped a lot of rarepairs, there's nothing as annoying as seeing new fic in the AO3 tag, only to find out it's a one sentence throwaway mention in a fic for a popular pairing.

I know there is a copy of the script pretty widely available because I've seen a lot of screenshots and people making reference to it. I just couldn't tell you where :( Sorry

They kind of irritate me tbh. Ships that only play a small backseat role in a fic are generally just the author's headcanon, which can be gearing when it doesn't align with mine and distracts from their interpretation of the main pairing that I do like. I prefer it either made a focus of the work or left extremely minimal, if it's in there at all.

If you're going to tag a secondary pairing on AO3, they should either show up in the story significantly or it should be a "Person/Person (minor)" tag. I don't like being misrepresented to, but I also don't want to randomly not know about a bunch of pairings that will show up.

Secondary ships don’t really bother me. However, I don’t fundamentally dislike any ships, so that's likely a part of it. I guess people “pairing the spares” can be a little grating, especially with the implication that everyone needs to be paired up with someone. I also fully concede that it makes rare-pair searches on AO3 frustrating too.

But all that aside, “author convince me”. I’ll ship anything in the armada if it’s well written and a throw-away line about a ship that gets zero focus is, for me, a minor distraction at worst.

I find a lot of big fandoms default to "pairing the spares". I remember when Star Trek 2009 came out, every fic had every character paired with someone, which was annoying because it was like four or five different secondary pairings for a main pairing fic.

But when does something not need a tag? If Character A in a A/B fic has one line like "Oh, Character C is probably off with character D", does that really require a C/D (minor) tag?

1) why does that line even need to be there if it doesn't serve story purposes?
2) "off with" doesn't necessarily imply a sexual relationship

I find it annoying just because it's unrealistic. Not everyone is paired in real life, especially not in a situation like a workplace or a group of friends or a cohort at school, etc. Look around the groups you hang out with irl: is every single person paired, and are all the partners someone within the group? No? Then you see why having that in the fics makes it real hard for me to suspend my disbelief.

I don't know, I'm not the one writing fics like that, but there are plenty of fics that do that type of thing and tag the pairing. it was just an example. It could have just as well been "on a date" or "is sleeping with".

It's was more just a question of, do people need to tag every pairing, no matter how minor, if it's only one line talking about them?

I am honestly saying that the answer to that question is that people need to stop writing irrelevant single lines about side pairings.

Poe/Leia currently has five fics on AO3 so I think it still counts as a rarepair, but I'm delighted by how many people I've encountered both on and off this meme that ship it. :D

Has anyone written Maz/Chewie yet? I...don't see myself ever wanting to read porn about a Wookiee and a whatever-Maz-is, but crack or fluff about how/when Maz decided Chewie was her boyfriend could be cute.

I would love to seeing Chewie/anyone in general, with him being portrayed as a very smooth ladies' man.

Poe/Leia is very underrated, it has so much potential for angst (which I love) and tenderness and honestly I just like the idea of Leia having a handsome young man there to cater to her needs.
